Bartel Becomes MD at KTU (link)

So what does this mean for KTU since Bartel got promoted? More Classic Dance hits like WNEW to be more competitive against 102.7?

I really hope it does mean this too. They should also become Classic Dance. I love Dance music but classic dance even more. WKTU would still sound great. But one thing for sure, they really need to lower that console speed. Even though people are used to hearing Dance music at a fast pace, the music sounds awful like that. Mix has the right idea, normal speed on records and classic dance.

I hope Bartel leans to more current dance music. We already have tons of stations playing disco and classic dance, KTU needs to go current and drop all the disco. Lets try to diversify NYC radio rather than add more of whats already on other stations..... BARTEL GO CURRENT!!!

All currrents equals death

If they go completely current they will die. KTU can add currents as the day goes by. The current Dance crowd tends to listen in the late afternoon and at night. You want to get the boomers in morning, drive home, and lunch.

A currents Dance station will drop the ratings and would not garner better demos for the advertisers.

Classic Dance throughout most of the day and current Dance at nght allows the sales force to go after a wider range of advertiser. Since you are essentially targeting a different audience it squeezes the amount of available time for a certain demographis to particular time periods. This allows the station to charge premium rates for the air time. Kaching.

Classic Dance will remain a staple of NYC radio because of the huge impact 92 KTU had on NYC in the 70s.

The on;y way I can see an all current station in NYC is if there is another dance craze. I don't see that any time in the next couple of years because of the dominance Hip Hop has on the current audience. You'll probably see a Classic Hip Hopper before 24/7 current Dance.

I don't know who you are, but there is no way NYC would allow a station to pitch up songs and with computer systems from a master hard drive it's even more difficult. No - impossible to do it. Get a clue or work your conspiracy theories on the JFK mystery.

As far as Bartel goes, I have listened to him and he sounds GREAT on KTU - genuinely into the music and a real jock.

My prediction for 2006? KTU will rise further, MIX fades into obscurity even deeper and Jack becomes Jill. Think about it for a minute.

Re: All currrents equals death

I agree 100% Ivan. KTU should definitly go this way to classic dance most of the day and the current dance at night. Your right for advertising and demo's it would be better and the station would probably make more money too. I also agree that KTU would drop bad in ratings too if it was just current dance hits station. I don't see that happening either with KTU. If anything i can see them becoming more of a classic dance station type station with some currents added in sort of like WNEW.

Bartel Definitly sounds great on KTU. As far as a NYC station pitching up songs Nope, I agree 100%. As for Jack what programmers at WCBSFM/Jack should try to boost ratings up is try an oldies type jack without the rock stuff and just have the KTU type music mixed in, maybe play records from 55-now, this would most likely work for Jack since nothing they do seems to be working. Oldies was the only format working good for CBSFM for over 33 yrs then they destroy it June 3rd for no reason then they go jack etc. Making it an oldies type jack to try out would be the least they can do. I don't see Mix fading unless KTU really dubbles up on classic dance with currents.

I've been pilloried for dealing frankly with this subject for the past year or so, but the fact is that most current dance singles don't have mainstream crossover appeal, and a station playing the current dance'hits' will make "Jack" NY look like Z100 in comparison. The dance community needs to be able to accept pop ish and left field dance singles that break the norm as the 'cost of doing business',rather than just supporting tracks that reflect their sometimes limited and predictable personal taste;either that,or they won't have to worry about the cost of doing business,as there won't be ANY(an eventuality I predicted two and a half years ago,and which has just about manifested itself into reality.

Re: All currrents equals death

As a current dance advocate unfortunately I have to agree with you.
KTU as current dance in this market would probably pull in a 1.8-2.0 share but they wouldn't be as good of a sell to advertisers.
KTU and MIX will battle in out for years to come and us dance fans can be glad we have two stations, classic dance or not to do so.
Most markets have none.
That being said, there is always XM's BPM playing currents 24hrs. a day w/ no commercials and on the family plan it's only 6 bucks a month for car and home.

Shock to the system folks???....I also agree. For NOW.

HOWEVER, sprinkling one or two current tracks during the dayparts won't hurt. Even classic dance fans want a little something new. I still say if a KTU HD-2 does current dance, you can still get a good chunk of people tuning in once HD-2 is accessible to all. And if a track on the HD-2 side does good, you can "graduate" it over to regular KRU

Classic hip-hop? I can see it on a Hot 97 HD-2.

It seems that is what is happening now.

They added "Be My World" by Milky and "Alright" by Red Carpet. If they really want to floor me, add "Dancin" by Aaron Smith

My prediction;
1)LITE FM
2)MEGA
3)98.7 KISS
4)Z100
5)HOT 97
6)POWER 105
7)K-ROCK(due to interest in Stern's departure)
Jack will continue to bottom feed, and MIX will continue to hold down KTU,in fact MIX will show a little upward movement.

My predictions!

WELL, I nailed the top 5 winners, and got three out of five positions spot on.KROCK held tight, MIX didn't rise, but still helped to pull KTU back down into the 2's; I think I did OK!
