Bartlesville Radio

Whth all the trouble radio stations are having with sales why have the Bartlesville Radio stations not moved into the Tulsa market?

The Potters do an incredible job with the Bartlesville stations. KWON/KYFM and KRIG have long been staples of the community, and sound like they do big numbers from listening. Those stations were very successful back through the ownership of Galen Gilbert and some fine people who have worked there throughout the years.

I certainly don't know specifics, but I would be willing to bet that the stations there in Bartlesville may bill as much as some of the second tier Tulsa stations. Having Phillips 66 in town in the times of high gas prices certainly won't hurt anything.

Maybe they are content doing an excellent job of super-serving the market their signal actually covers. Too bad there aern't more owners that think that way. Part of the problem with radio today is owners aren't willing to have milk but are so greedy all they will accept is the creme. With the exception of only a handfull of stations per market there simply isn't enough of the creme money to go around. Move-ins rarely get a part of it.

Very well said OKCRadioGuy.. not every station wants to move to a bigger market.

The question of why the Bartlesville stations haven't moved into Tulsa is like asking why the remaining Enid stations haven't followed the likes of 96.9 and soon-to-be 99.7 in moving to Oklahoma City.

It's probably a couple of factors. One of which is that, in the case of KRIG, they can't. KREK in Bristow prevents 104.9 Nowata from moving into Tulsa. The AM's aren't likely to be upgradeable either. Another is that, in the case of KYFM, they can't move into Tulsa and be anything but a second-tier rimshot. KCXR 100.3 would prevent them from becoming a rimshot with a chance. The other reason you haven't seen Bartlesville stations move in is that they're doing okay where they are.

I agree with Grant that the Potters do very well with the Bartlesville stations. They're probably very happy being big fish in a small pond.
