Baseball Coverage

1530 at it again - carry the Sunday Night Baseball game only to butcher it. Ha - the pregame was 2 feeds going at the same time. OK - that's pregame, whatever. Once the game starts, the play-by-play is cut mid-sentence, eliminating the top of the inning completely.

I assume this was some kind of computer glitch - at least the two feeds going at the same time. The play-by-play being cut? Maybe that was a computer problem, too. However, this makes me wonder if anyone at the station is monitoring what is being put out over the air.

While we're on the subject, one of my big complaints has been the failure of WCKY & WSAI to air post-season baseball games that are played on weekday afternoons. There can be a good match-up taking place and you tune in and one or both of those stations have someone on talking and talking on and on about how he feels about something. Unfortunately, since it's in the daytime, you really can't pick up an out-of-town station that is broadcasting the game you'd like to hear.

For those with access to Fox Sports Ohio coverage of Tuesday's game - Pie Alert. Cowboy lost his bet on Miss./UK football. Jeff PIEcoro will apply pie to the face of one Cowboy.

What a shame. WCKY is a powerhouse 50kw north-south signal. You can hear it in Chicago the way you hear it in Cheviot. If someone would just apply a little effort to tightening up the automation cues and log...it would sound a lot better. Baseball games are fine. If it is a network sending the right cues issue that might be something different. But two feeds airing at the same time sounds like something locally might be wrong.

Last month, I was critical of WCKY/WSAI for not airing weekday day games of baseball play-off games. Now, I have to compliment WCKY as they have been carrying night and day post-season baseball games this year. The only games they haven't had are those that are being played when there is a college football game that they are under contract to air.

That's a nice change. Wish our Columbus ESPN affiliate would carry them instead of the usual boring national talk.

Unfortunately, WCKY did not carry the Indians-Astros play-off game on Monday afternoon. I assume it was so they could do the local show, talk about the Bengals' win on Sunday and air the Marvin Lewis press conference live.

Yeah - on Sunday, WCKY carried Bengals postgame (along w/WLW) for quite awhile, then cut to Red Sox/Astros mid-game from Boston. But the postseason airings have gone quite smooth. Not sure if this is first time for female announcer postseason - paired w/Jon Sciambi. Talk about a change of tradition! I like Chris Singleton.

Jessica Mendoza has been on ESPN's television broadcasts for a few years now. She replaced new Yankees skipper Aaron Boone on ESPN Radio this season.

It's a blaster in this part of the country because it's directional east to protect Seattle's KOMO. Main lobe shoots straight east but I imagine it comes in very well in Cincinnati as well. Usually the best Chicago 50K here in Columbus, just ahead of WGN.
Our Columbus ESPN affiliates actually have carried a lot of postseason games this year. It had been years since they carried the majority of LDS and LCS games, but they did this year on either the FM or AM signal regardless of whether they were day or night games. That's how it should be.

WMVP does have an excellent signal in this area. The only coverage that moves post-season baseball off that station are when it carries Notre Dame football games.

I, too, can recall when it was WCFL - "The Voice of Labor" - and broadcast the White Sox games with Bob Elson.

I've got WMVP on here (northeast suburb of Cincinnati), but I've had it much stronger in the past. I was out in the car a little earlier and it was drifting in and out. WCKY is carrying something else tonight so if you want to hear Game Three on radio the basic way to go is from that station.

Thank goodness for AM night coverage. It is about the only way in the era of pay per view and streaming that we can catch a broadcast. without going to the poor house.

I made a similar point on Hal McCoy's blog: by restricting access to games (compared to what TV coverage used to be during baseball season), MLB's kinda shot themselves in the foot, resulting in attendance drops. Nice job by Mo (in for Lance) tonight w/Reds analysis.
