Nothing like this in San Diego,-yet.
An interesting item from Dayton,Ohio. TIS is now 'Information Radio' 1610&1660. Slightly out of compliance with FCC Part 90,
live games, interviews and news/weather reports on the hour are being broadcast.The site even has a powerpoint presentation to
boost this 'non-profit' enterprise.Even those who know better-"Hams", are in on this.

Uh... yeah.. I'd say he's more than bending the rules on this "station". I'm sure his intentions are good but the rules don't exactly allow for things like ball games on TIS!
 
Listening to this stream it seems that it indeed conforms to the rules. They are using these stations for public annncments of non-profit community events and activities..of which public school athletics is one. Most TIS stations are just computers with low power AM transmitters (licensed) limited bandwidth, and can not play music or commercial spots. That's what this sounds like. Whoever is running these is doing so with much more extensive manpower and actually operating it. I don't think the rules state that a TIS can only be run on automation, as they can be live as well.

Actually scanning the programming reveals nothing out of line IMHO. The "garage sales" are community events, not private sales..the ball games are community events. The stations do not nessicerilly have to be emergency traffic only, unless there is an emergency..then they can be commandeered by the authorities (just like commercial stations)
 
(7) Travelers' Information Stations shall transmit only noncommercial voice information pertaining to traffic and road conditions, traffic hazard and travel advisories, directions, availability of lodging, rest stops and service stations, and descriptions of local points of interest

Hmm..may be a little out of bunds but a high school basketball game can certainly be considered a local point of interest.

Availability of lodging? Sounds like it could run some type of non call to action commercial content..

Service stations? Could also be for truck stops...travel plazas etc..

To stick to the rules even further there is a section that stipulates a very narrow bandwidth with a real conservative cap on frequency response..so they can't sound "too good" What is the rationale there?

Seriously with the lack of staff, and the need to choose their battles, I doubt that the FCC is going to make a huge fuss over this non-issue that is causing no interference to the big stations or offending the public. And if they do, the operator can certainly make a case for its current programming, and follow it up with a humble "sorry about that" and continue on..just not a big deal..and truthfully..really now..why would the FCC not consider relaxing the rules a bit if a community is willing to staff these stations and actually provide a service to the traveling populus? C'mon..this is just not a big deal is it?
