Baseball Networks

Why do the Atlanta Braves have 3 different networks to broadcast the games on? I can see some people might hate that. I could see them use just two like the Mets and Yankees do with one cable network and one local broadcast channel. Or just one network like the Red Sox do by broadcasting all the games on NESN with the regular FOX or ESPN weekend game. What other MLB teams have 3 different networks to air their games or do they have just two or one network where they air games on?

Here in Florida, the Rays and Marlins have all their games on cable, which I think is pretty rare among all the MLB teams judging by the TV schedules I've seen. They share time between Sun Sports and FS (Fox Sports) Florida - both owned by Fox. By the way, any idea why they dropped the "N" from FSN?

I agree that all teams should have their games on only one channel when possible. It just makes it easier for the average fan to follow the local team.

Yeah, when watching highlights on SportsCenter, instead of seeing "FSN" it's just "FSMavericks" or "FSRoyals"... Even for Prime Ticket, I see "PTDodgers". I guess I don't blame Cablevision for changing the name of their secondary cable network from FSN New York to MSG Plus - I think "FSDevils" would have a bad ring to it...

As far as the Braves having two networks, I know one of then, SportSouth, is the former Turner South channel that was sold to Fox/Liberty who decided to turn it into another sports channel, reviving the old name. I guess the question that should be asked is, why do both SportSouth and FS South exist?

FOX Sports only owns 50% of SunSports (which they program).

The Braves have three. FS South, SportSouth, and Peachtree TV.

And about the two Florida teams. Why doesn't Sun just carry one team and FS Florida carry the other. I don't see why they do that.

Well, as TBS reduced its Braves schedule - Turner Broadcasting created two different regional sports networks - SportSouth and Turner South. Over the years, they sold both of those networks to FOX - and kept 45 games for their own Peachtree TV.

FOX still splits the games because they get more revenue from two cable networks than they would get from putting the games all on one channel.

Let's not forget CSS, which simulcasts Peachtree TV's feed to the rest of the Braves regional territory outside of the Atlanta tv market.

Actually, there are 14 MLB teams whose local games are cable-only. From another message board, here's a list of OTA games by team (not including Fox Saturday games):

Angels - 26 on KCOP
Astros - 8 on KTXH
A's - none
Blue Jays - none
Braves - 44 on WPCH
Brewers - 13 on WMLW
Cardinals - 22 on KSDK
Cubs - 60 on WGN, 8 on WCIU
D-Backs - none
Dodgers - 48 on KCAL
Giants - 20 on NBC-11
Indians - 20 on WKYC (simulcast on STO)
Mariners - none
Marlins - none
Mets - 25 on WPIX
Nationals - none
Orioles - none
Padres - none
Phillies - 43 on My17
Pirates - none
Rangers - 24 on KDFI, 1 (opening day) on KDFW
Rays - website lists WXPX as TV affiliate, but no schedule posted
Red Sox - none
Reds - none
Rockies - none
Royals - none
Tigers - none
Twins - 26 on WFTC
White Sox - 29 on WGN, 25 on WCIU
Yankees - 21 on WWOR

Thats almost half of the MLB teams.

Who gets CSS, its not on Time Warner Cable around the Myrtle Beach area. I believe Charleston area may have it as that is Comcast territory. Let me correct that for the Myrtle Beach area. Time Warner carries Peachtree TV on digital cable as I saw that on their channel list website at twcsc.com

WXPX (and a couple other Pax Florida affils) carried Rays games until last year, when they exclusively signed a deal with Sun/Fox Sports Florida

Let's not forget the Phillies home opener traditionally airs on KYW/3.

Also, I believe the local Pax station in Miami aired Marlins games, as well...

WPXM, Miami's Ion (Pax) station, shared the broadcast rights of the Marlins with Fox Sports Florida (with FS Florida handling all production) until 2007. Those WPXM games became part of the Sun Sports package...55 on Sun, 95 on FS Florida.

Also...WFTC's Twins telecasts are simulcast on Fox Sports North outside of the Twin Cities market. Similarly across the border, WMLW's Brewers games are on Fox Sports Wisconsin outside of the Milwaukee market.

The Orioles and Nationals still offer over-the-air telecasts, on WJZ and WDCW respectively. Much like the Minnesota and Milwaukee set-ups, those games are offered on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (plus its secondary channel) outside of the Beltway. Twenty Nats on WDCW, and about 25 on WJZ.

Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox broadcast on CSN Chicago, WGN (Channel 9) and WCIU (Channel 26) (which is the Cubs/Sox Net, which broadcast across the state). To my knowledge, the Cardinals games on KSDK (Channel 5) are all Sunday games (and, even though I am a Cub fan, it is good to hear Jay Randolph broadcasting the games again-he does not broadcast the games on FS Midwest) and it is part of the Cardinal network that broadcast mostly across Eastern Missouri and Central and Southern Illinois.

I meant to mention this in my previous post: Not to sound like too big of a nerd, but has anyone else noticed how FS has gone back to the corner scoreboard graphic instead of at the top or bottom of the screen like most other networks have switched to recently? Just an observation.

It was done to accommodate the RSNs not called FOX Sports (i.e., Comcast Sports Net, SunSports*, SportSouth**).

*Programmed by FOX Sports (also owns 50%)
**FOX Sports O&O

To add to radioguy's statements...the Liberty Media-owned Fox Sports channels (Pittsburgh, Rocky Mountain/Utah, and Northwest) are still branded "FSN" with the previous logo. I wouldn't be surprised if Liberty eventually goes away from the "Fox Sports Net" brand and creates their own, while keeping some Fox Sports Net programming. The only valuable programming on FSN nationally now is their college sports coverage (Pac-10 basketball and football, Big 12 basketball and football, ACC Sunday Night basketball and regional baseball games, and regional SEC basketball and baseball) and AVP volleyball, and they're gradually moving away from originally-produced shows.
