Baseball playoffs on local and national radio

On Wed & Thur, the local ESPN radio affiliate(KESN 103.3) carried the national radio feed of the Rangers/Rays game. KRLD-FM carried the local broadcast. I thought MLB and/or the local rights holder could protect the local broadcast. I don't know if the Texas Rangers Radio Network was on for the playoff games or not.


Does anyone know the rules of national vs. local broadcasting rules for MLB?
 
according to it's wikipedia article, other than world series coverage, there's no protection for the local flagship. I know away from the flagship, you can regularly hear the local feed and the national feed on competing stations.

I believe that During the Early rounds the Local team network can run and National feed can go to the local city.
The World Series only the National feed can go nationwide but if you pay MLB.com or have XM you then can get the local broadcast anywhere (I think)

I know with XM you get the home, away, and national feeds of every game throughout the playoffs. I'm an XM subscriber.

Assuming a team (the Yankees) makes the World Series, the only station that can broadcast those games is its flagship. Affiliates of that team get the ESPN Radio national feed instead.

I believe the last time the Indians were in the playoffs (2007), sports talker WKNR/850 was allowed to carry the national feed (ESPN). The Indians' flagship is WTAM/1100.

Of course, they didn't make it into the WS...where I presume WTAM ONLY would have been allowed to carry the local PBP. I can't remember what happened in 1995 and 1997...

In 1995 and 1997, then-Indians flagship WKNR/1220 carried the local play-by-play coverage of the World Series. The other Indians Radio Network affiliates, however, had to air CBS Radio Sports' PBP instead. If memory serves right, the Indians Radio Network fed pregame and postgame shows of their own to all of the affiliates - and to WKNR - before the CBS coverage started.

That MLB policy obviously continued after ESPN Radio took over the national PBP rights in 1998...
 
A question: Can the IRN affiliates sign up only to carry the ESPN coverage?

Would the ESPN affiliate (WKNR in this case) prohibit stations like WAKR/1590, WEOL/930 and the like from joining up with ESPN just for one WS? Neither station has any ties to ESPN otherwise, and ditto with a whole bunch of the other IRN affiliates.

Of course, the Indians seem farther away than ever from returning to the WS, so maybe this is all moot. :D

You can sign up to just carry whatever sports you want (Just MLB, Just NBA, etc.) but there is some sort of exclusivity zone the full-timers get. I remember being PD of an ESPN affiliate and in the next market over (a 100kw FM sports blowtorch that was SNR and a heavy dose of local talk at the time) picked up ESPN game broadcasts, and there was nothing we could do about it because they weren't in the same market.
 
Since the Giants are in the World Series, who does the PBP for KNBR, Jon Miller or their back up. Should KNBR/Giants let Jon Miller do ESPN Radio broadcasts while he is still employed by KNBR/Giants. Wouldn't you want your main PBP guy doing your WS broadcasts....

Since Jon Miller has already been doing ESPN Radio broadcasts the rest of the playoffs i believe i have only been hearing espn radio calls during highlights on sportscenter on ESPN. but more than likely i believe Miller will be on ESPN Radio for the WS since hes their top PBP guy for baseball

Miller must have a very good deal with the Giants.

Duane Kuiper (the play-by-play voice on Giants CSN Bay Area telecasts) and Dave Flemming (the #2 radio guy) have been doing the play-by-play on KNBR.
