Bashin'(on)the River

Just curious here, don't want to start a flamewar, but...

Why the thumping on WRVR? I was on the air there over on Central when it was WQUD, during the call letter change, and the first person on the air from the new Ridgeway studios...and built half of the darn thing. The station has always been a strong ratings performer and a good revenue source. I personally think they have done a good job adjusting the music within the 'soft rock' confines over the years. Granted, it's not what you would call 'exciting radio' and it does get pretty sleepy from time to time (although there was a period from about 1980-1981 when we were just about CHR), but it seems to me to be one of the city's long-term success stories.

I'm just sayin'

(softly) Rock On!

I had a consultant give me a great line about this format that has stuck with me over the years...

"Nobody likes it... but the listeners."

'Nuff said, I think.

I didn't bash "The River". I made a joke about the Christmas music starting a bit too early for my tastes. I am friends with several people there, and it's been sucessful in the ratings forever. Some of the most radio fun I've had in fairly recent years was a regular shift on "Solid Gold Sunday".

I kind of bashed the ratings systems. I'll just say that "Vanilla" is considered by most to be a run-of-the-mill, boring flavor. However, it remains one of the strongest sellers amongst all the 31 flavors. I guess you could call it a "Heritage" flavor.

Could it be that some people are ordering "Vanilla" when we're alone while we want everyone to think we're ordering "Triple Mocca Swirl ****** w/ Sprinkles?"

HA!

Peace!

Meep!

LOL

You bet there are. They keep another station on the next button for when they come to an intersection with the windows down.

The River is a great radio station because it's not intrusive, it's great background and it's got heritage. When someone mentions The River, people in Memphis automatically know the frequency and the music. The consultant was right when he said "nobody likes it but the listeners." I might add that advertisers love it because of the listeners and the quality of the cash they spend.
