Baton Rouge numbers assesment..

After reading the thread about the numbers in BR, I'd like to give my take on some of the more popular stations in the area. I at some point everyday listen to all of them for some reason or another. here it goes

Wynk- Wynk is the powerhouse country station and always will be b/c it is run better then most. How many times has Wynk tampered with the call letters? or the basic imaging? The last major change WYNK had was the logo change a few years back. They keep the same jocks are recently attempting to play a little bit more older coutnry to balance out with the Legends.

WFMF- Personally I like what WFMF does. I like to listen to some of the urban music but I like the mix of pop also. I think that Kid Kraddick is the best syndicated show thats on in the BR market.

96.1 The River- Again the River is one that stays strong b/c there is never a major change in the mix. The same jocks have been there forever and it keeps its core listeners there.

WJBO- Good local talk mixed with the two most popular national shows in Rush and Hannity. Clarence Buggs has one of the Best local talk shows in town.

WSKR 1210- Baton Rouge is a good sports town. All college towns have a place for a sports talk station. I believe that again it has a good mix of local and national shows. The Herd is the best sports talk show on radio. Some of the local shows arent what you'd call the greatest shows ever. But, it keeps its core listeners there. According to the books there was a jump in the books. Thats odd considering that football season is where the numbers are usually best. I really dont know whats bringing in more listeners to the station past football season.

WIBR- Ed Buggs Carries the station in the Afternoon. He's the best local talker in town. Condon does a good show but the format seems to change daily. If not hourly. They should have stayed sports talk.

103.3- They committed suicide b/c they have the same format and imaging as a station that beams in crystal clear from NO.

94.1- It is the best urban station in town. I'm not big on the kinda music they play, but its whats hot.

98.1 Eagle- LSU is a huge part of what they are. I dont really like the direction the music is going on the station. But, what's good about Eagle is they dont make a lot of changes with jocks. W&J in the morning and Scotty Drake in the afternoon have been mainstays for years. The only casualty I can think of is Michelle leblanc. Its still on the presets in my car.

93.7- They may have also committed suicide with the format they have. Don't get me wrong, I love the mix b/c it really appeals to all the music I like, but how many people are like me? If your a southern rock 98.1 kinda guy, you dont want to go from hearing Skynard to Klymaxx or Avril.

100.7- They switched from that whole goofy Texas thing to a much better imaging. They can't compete with WYNK.

Country Legends- I enjoy the legends. I love some good classic country. It is another one of those presets in the car. I wish they'd liven it up some with jocks that werent so dull. I love Brian King though, he fits that station perfectly. Plus, I guess you dont need lively jocks on a station that appeals mostly to the older crowd. I enjoy it though. I love hearing a lil conway every now and then.

Personally, I believe that the citadel stations change so much, whether it is format or jocks or a lil of both that it is hard for them to keep a core audience. It seems like every week there is a new morning show or a new format on one of those stations.

I listen to this station everyday. If there is one thing that gets sports talk going, it is failure. They are hot after LSU wins a national championship, but even hotter when people are clamoring for a coach to be fired, as was the case in basketball season, and now after baseball season.<P ID="signature">______________

You are correct. That is how it goes though. I never figured out why other than the fact that people just want something to complain about? Who knows. But, I for a fact know that the talk is much hotter after an LSU football loss.
