Bauer-Harlem Shake

A sure add at CHR. Who wouldn't want to play one of the most talked about songs of the day?

I would say quite the opposite as several on this thread...If you don't add it, you have lost touch with the under 30's.

True...but the problem is how many listeners are going to change the station because they dislike it so much - same problem as Gangnam Style IMO, but probably worse because the novelty of the sound has worn off

I think it should be limited to mixshow play only. It is a dj mixshow type song.

Why? It's a hot trendy song right now. Like others who were saying, top 40 is a lifestyle/trend format and they're going to play stuff that is popular right now. I'm sure local top 40s are getting blown up with calls and facebook/twitter posts to play the song.

Yeah, but again, if half the listeners can't stand it and change the station when it comes on, that's a big problem - this is why Gangnam Style had a pop chart run of 8 weeks

Play it while it's hot. You can't call yourself CHR and ignore the biggest song out there right now. Unless you're Cumulus.

That's all you need, play it during it's 8 week chart run while it's hot and you're good to go!!

Except for the half of your audience that's now listening to another station...

Do you have any M scores to base this off of or are you following the same "I dont like it, so nobody else can" attitude that you have been arguing against in the anti-Cumulus threads?
Its a terrible song, then again I'm more of an Alternative listener than a CHR listener anyway, but radio ignoring a song that's #1 on the Hot 100 with negligible airplay (I'd venture a guess that it would be top 5 without the YouTube component) is a problem.

Gangnam Style definitely had huge dislike numbers, so I'm assuming this will too - obviously, I can't prove it yet - I'm just pointing out that just because a track is "hot", or has huge sales, doesn't mean that it's beneficial for stations to add, especially if the bulk of people buying the track are under 18

A couple of quick notes:

"Gangnam Style" is still getting airplay from some CHR stations, including Cumulus-owned B-100 Quad Cities

Most of the people posting a meme video of the "Harlem Shake" are over 18, and it's a big hit with the at-work office crowds.

Lastly, the CHR audience targets first and foremost 18-34 year old females, and they seem to be highly amused by the tune and its countless videos.

The record's popularity will likely fade pretty quickly, but there's nothing wrong with giving the "Harlem Shake" some exposure on CHR radio for the time being. We're not in the mid 90s when CHR radio was afraid to play novelty records like "Short Dick Man" by 20 Fingers, or "Cotton Eyed Joe" by Rednex.

Besides, I think part of the CHR audience is much more turned off by radio overplaying songs like "Thrift Shop" and "Don't You Worry Child" every hour. Meaning there's a possibility that part of your audience will tune into another station if they hear a song one too many times per day, just as they are when they hear an unfamiliar record that sounds different from the rest.
A good CHR will know how to navigate these waters, and find ways to continually excite their listeners, and keep them coming back for more.

^^ I think he is basing that on all the videos done by people in real office settings. Not too mentioned the videos done by the Today Show,Daily Show etc etc.

More stations are adding this song. Add KTFM to the list.

My guess this song will get 40-50 spins on KTFM by end of week. There's too much hype for any Top 40 station not play it.

The popularity of Harlem Shake has nothing to do with the song itself...but everything to do with the lame videos people are making. Programmers would be wise to not put this in power or even moderate rotation. Maybe play it once in the evening hours just due to hype. I highly doubt people want this on their radio...nor if it is...they won't be walking away humming the tune. The track will be lucky to make the top 30 at radio.

Is this going to become a new trend on CHR? These horrible "viral" "recordings" actually getting airplay (Gangam Style and Harlem Shake as examples)?

If so, I'm done...

Channel 96.1 in Charlotte actually played "Friday" by Rebecca Black a few times back in early 2011.

I don't have a problem with Gangnam Style. It's no different than anything LFMAO put out.

Cumulus didn't add 'Gangnam Style' until the fad had pretty much already passed. Now its likely they will continue to play it out for the next several years. That is the Cumulus way.
