Bay Area CBS Stations...

Glancing at the 12+ numbers on All Access and noticed Free-FM has again not showed up in a book. Are their demo numbers showing any promise? Also Live 105 continues to nosedive. What changes do you think need to be made to turn things around (morning show, more golds and less newer songs etc.) or is this just a sign, as seen around the country, that alternative stations are slowly fading away?

Time will tell for Live 105, however it's too soon to make any changes. Howard has only been off since January and a morning show needs time to grow and become part of the market. The station overall sounds really good compared to most alternative stations out there. I'm not in the Bay Area, but I can say they are better than the alt rocker we have here in Chicago (Q101)! Thank god CBS finally is streaming their stations! NOTE: The 12+ #'s have been taking a bit of a hit, but not nearly as hard as the other former Howard Stern stations out there. This says to me that there's something there, but like I said, time will tell. Although that "something there" even with Howard was in the low to mid 2 share range.Other Bay Area questions: 1) Is your FREE-FM as bad as I'm reading? Have they really had to replace almost every daypart already with the exception of Adam? 2) No CHR in the market eh? That seems odd for such a large market.

1069FreeFM has only 2 hours of local programming M-F. Its a joke.

All FREE-FM'S programs are syndicated and recorded. How are you going to call a recorded show?KGO: Live & local.

Not true.Mornings are liveNoon-3 is liveAfternoons are live (and local)Evenings ARE taped. The most important dayparts are live.AND 106.9's audience is growing in demo. There is no way to declare this station a failure, at this stage. Talk stations take at least a year to show their potential.

I think Turi is the only one who actually come in. Live mornings...but not local, syndicated....12-3 pm Live, but not local, out of NYC.where that show is live 3-6p. OR Local to NYC.Afternoons are/have been their rotating audition shows. Guys out of Phoenix, Guys out of Atlanta...all who sucked. The guy who is a weekender at KFI, I Think, is out of LA. He's fair but not great, Johney Wendell is his air name. If he get's the gigI think he'll do it from LA, since he says he has kids etc. Translation 106.9...Don'tquit your weekend job. Although someone I know who works there said he did come in for about a week when London self distructed. So I guess that makes him...Live and temporarly local. ;)

Anybody hear those guys Jimmy and Rick Saturday afternoon? I think they were live. Anyone know their deal? They sounded okay.

Turi is gone now. Only live local is afternoon and thats only the the 2 'talents' from St. Louis. One guy sounds like Kermit the frog. Management has no idea what it is doing.

I would not be surprised if they ait Leykis live 3-7, from LA or even run Opie and Anthony on a prercorded basis.

My question is, if all or most of programming is syndicated, why do they need a PD?

1069 has quickly morphed into KYCY Am 1550 befor it became the podcasting station.

I agree with the Lykis thing...If they are truly commited to this format (LOL).
Even if they are all syndicated, running live is a better Idea.

The program director was a producer from their LA station. KLSX, I believe.

Ken Kohl, the other principle at the station, has sort of drifted over to KCBS I here
from insiders...Perhaps distance from 106.9 is what he's seeking.

I would not want to be the guy who has to explain to CBS Managment why their
90 million Dollar investment is a disaster. If I were CBS, I would have to have
more than a few questions about their choices for air staff, (Darien and London
gone for cause) and the months that have passed with no pemanent replacements.

That says to me " Hi, I'm in charge and I haven't got a Clue" And the few decision I did make were bad ones.

But then I've only been in the business 36 years...perhaps lossing money is what CBS want's to do. ;)

It's amazing to me that the people who program talk stations don't heed what I think is the REAL lesson of KGO's quarter century of ratings dominance - "live and local" brings in the most audience and builds listener loyalty, even if it costs extra money. That shouldn't change just because you're seeking a younger demographic, as Free FM supposedly is. From what I can tell, syndicated shows fare worse in the Bay Area than in other markets - Howard Stern, Rush, and Dr. Laura being the exceptions. Even the evil Satan (Clear Channel) has learned this lesson and has shelled out a few dollars for the local Will and Willie Morning Show on KQKE. Plugging in Tom Leykis is an obvious and unimaginitive choice, and I realize he's very popular nationally - but his show has NOT worked TWICE before in the Bay Area - on KPIX (95.7) and CBS sister station KYCY. Granted, these were both pathetic attempts at talk radio, and were never promoted by Westinghouse or CBS, respectively. So far, it looks like Free FM is going down that same road.

On the bright side for CBS, the main benefactors of Howard Stern's loss for Live 105 seems to be high ratings for the Sarah and No Name morning show on Alice - another CBS station. Gee- another small victory for live and local. And CBS seems to be making an earnest attempt to fix KFRC.

CBS is not streaming KFRC 99.7 and would like to see them stream.

Could it be that CBS is planning to sell all, or almost all of its stations? Certain signs seem to point to this...

Of course no one who really knows anything will say, but the ratings, the stagnant state of the stations, the obsession with keeping the "bottom line" at the lowest possible point (even lower than usual), the recent split from Viacom, and just the "quiet" that hangs over everything... it all gives the feel of a big change in the works.

Rumors are just that, but the feeling that the "for sale" signs are being prepared somewhere grows each day.

I hope so, i whouldint mind cbs radio leaveing over here, they are the worst stations in the bay! the only good station is kfrc

Clear Channel is after the FCC to further loosen the ownership rules so it can grow even bigger! When Citadel gets the ABC stations watch out because there is going to be a bloodbath like you've never seen!
Clear Channel then will trade or sell whatever they have to from their list of small underperforming stations and snatch up a lot of the ABC stations with the first one in the bay area being KGO! Just watch and see! The two small bay area bic lighters on AM 910,960 will be gone in a heartbeat to get KGO! Are you ready for John and Ken in the afternoon on KGO? Rush? I could see CC even do whatever it takes to get KCBS and KIFR 106.9.

The chances of CBS selling their SF stations are extremely slim. They have a virtually full cluster with 5 radio and 2 TV stations (all in same building). The CBS SF stations as a whole still crank out tons of cash flow. Work continues on rebuilding some of the strugglers...Alice is in full rebound, KFRC has been retooled and growing, don't write off KIFR. KCBS has been leading the market in billing, even beating KGO. Live 105 is a struggle, but personally I think the music is decent. (Perhaps I'm too "oldbossjock").

Look for CBS to selloff the list of medium and small market stations that they announced a month or so ago. KCBS leading the market in billing? What is your source on that one? Alice has a hot morning now and may be billing decently because of it. KITS is billing half of what they did last year. KFRC may be doing better than last year, but only because last year was a disaster. At least we can assume that KIFR is billing more than last year. The crazy Christians didn't seem too worried about the financial bottom line. The only thing that keeps major changes from happening at CBS San Francisco is the complete disarray at CBS Corporate.

"KCBS leading the market in billing? What is your source on that one?" I'm at a station where we see the Miller/Kaplan revenue rankings each month.

"Alice has a hot morning now and may be billing decently because of it." Ya think?

"The only thing that keeps major changes from happening at CBS San Francisco is the complete disarray at CBS Corporate."
Let's see, last year they brought in a new market manager, a new PD for Alice and launch of Free FM. This year PD for KFRC, new GSM for Alice, and DiNardo has been given Free FM to fix. Not to mention the morning change on Live. What other major changes would you expect at this point? Can you really argue that 6 months is long enough to gauge anything?

FreeFM has a new GM? interesting cuz insiders say he hasnt bothered to show up to intorduce himself. Guess he has better things, or stations to do or run.
