Bay Area Country Radio Station

One day soon country radio should return to the Bay Area airwaves...
Sonoma has 2 country stations and San Jose has one. That is three in the San Francisco market.

This idea comes up a lot. There was a time when there were two country stations in San Francisco. KSAN was country in the 80s & 90s and KYCY Young Country in the 90s and early 00s. The problem is the decline of the white population in San Francisco. At one time it was over 70%. Now it's around 40%. Not a good situation for country music.

You are correct on those stations but don’t forget KNEW 910 Classic Country also. I do believe this can work...especially if you have country concerts performing at Chase Center, Oakland Arena, SAP Center and Shoreline...

Shoreline is really KRTY territory. They have all of the "presents" there. I don't see a lot of major country stars at Oakland Arena They once did the Cow Palace at one time. The country stars know that if they're going to play northern CA, the place to be is Shoreline.

The Game was once The Bear. It lasted two years. That was the last real attempt at an in-city country station. That was 15 years ago. Cumulus also tried it, but that was more a San Jose station. It too flopped. It's hard to take a chance when the track record isn't good. KITS is the weakest link right now, but it's owned by the same company that tried The Bear in 2005. Do they want to blow up an alternative station for a format that didn't do much better? Hard argument to make.

But those stations cannot be heard full time without static in surrounding San Francisco Peninsula area and Oakland...
And if you look at the ethnicity and characteristics of that area, you can see that there is not going to be a significant country audience there. In fact, going back in time, most of the country listening fifteen years to two decades ago was not in those areas. Subscribers to Arbitron could see that easily in the county by county breaks.

I can see a few ā€œvulnerableā€ stations that could flip or be sold. At first I thought 103.7 would be one but I think their 80s plus format is kind of working now. Yes possible KITS could be one to flip formats but it could be a risk or maybe not. Another one could be KNBR FM 104.5 if Cumulus does their sale of stations to clear debt...

Let me know if anyone in Daly City or San Bruno walks around the neighborhood wearing a cowboy hat. And no, sun hats don't count. Justin and Stetson hats only.
My gist is...probably not. SF has never been a country town. They had 95.7 for a while but the ratings just weren't there. SF is too diverse for a country format (whites take up less than 50% of San Francisco proper). Seattle has nearby suburbs that are (for now) in the sticks where more country listeners would be. Not SF.
In fact, if you go back to the days when Paramount Network was TNN (pre-National Network, during their country days)...I checked the San Francisco Examiner microfilm on Newspapers.com and found out TNN wasn't even on the San Francisco cable lineup!

By the way, quick question, when 95.7 was still The Wolf, where in the Bay Area did people listen to the station the most? I would assume Solano County as they don't have as strong of a liberal lean as SF/Contra Costa/Alameda, but that's an awful long way from the transmitter and likely quite multipathed.

KNBR is one of the biggest pots of money in the entire chain. Especially right now in baseball season.

No matter who owns it, it will remain sports.
Possible and there really is no competitor unless its 95.7 (another story another time) but Cumulus would never turn down an offer especially if $$$ involve...

Solano County can get a country station but its out of Sacramento KNCI-FM technically.
Sure Solano County conservatives do exist but it is in the context of Travis Air Force Base in the area. Today if a media outlet is going to cover the area its going to be a 50/50 split between Sacramento Media Outlets and Bay Area given that Solano County is split in two DMA's.

Today the Solano area is the outer suburbs of two different census areas Sacramento and Bay Area. I know in the past Solano County was primarily Agriculture and Defense in past decades but thats changing pretty quickly though. I-80 Cordelia Interchange where CA-12 and I-680 meets is where the merger of different traffic patterns and where "Affordable Housing" combine together.

Can’t that I have seen anyone wearing country hats walking in this area unless they are visiting out of state. Doesn’t necessarily say there is hidden country young or old demographics in our region...
