BAY AREA RADIO FORMATS - WHO's PUSHING THE ENVELOPE?

Don't encourage that bag of hot air. Sometimes I cannot believe the make-believe that people who have never worked at a major market professional radio station concoct, then have the starch to post here.

David Kaye writes: "Did you know that KALW does ...? Did you know that KALW ya da ya da...? Did you know any of that? No, of course you didn't [assumption] because you chose instead to be a snark rather than contribute real content here....". Wow. Instant damnation.

Is THAT the kind of content to which you are referring, Kaye? -- selfish, small minded, envelope-shrinking rants based on another not sharing your opinion of things. Where you COULD be offering value, you cheapen this website.

MOST of your words all contain the arrogance of presumptions, sir. You dismiss a fellow Radio-Info visitor for not sharing your view AND even go so far as name-calling. You embarrass your mother. Mine, too.

There are many of us "others" who don't agree with your tiny, limited range of focus, David, Rather than allow us the freedom of personal opinion, do you just handily erase our Point Of View as irrelevant and label us all "snarks?" You sell yourself short.

There's an old saying that fits your comment(s) nicely: It takes one to know one, Snark boy. Try visiting this site and just reading sometime. Speaking for the many who are tired of your adolescent, ignorant, bragging, empty "content," be silent. You offer us nothing of value.

As for the Spanish Speaking stations........
Latino MIX 100.7/105.7......What the hell switch different music genre every month. They can't decide if they want to play more English music or Spanish music. Also.....their music is all mashed up with Spanish Pop, Rock en Espanol, Bachata, Reggaton,Tropical, and English Pop, Rock, and Dance music. One month is mostly Spanish Pop, and another month is mostly Bachata, Tropical, or Reggaton.

It's a Spanish language CHR. The specific genres vary widely from month to month just as the hits do.

Look at the grandpa of all US Spanish CHRs... WKAQ FM in San Juan (it dates back to 1968 in the same format, previously on FM) and the playlist does the same thing... one month more salsa, next month more reggaeton, next month more English pop, etc., etc. It's been doing that for the last 35 years, generally in the top 3 stations. Oh, and it has the same owner as Latino Mix

Estereo Sol 98.9/99.1 Can't decide what specific genre of Regional Mexican, similar to Latino Mix......playing heavy rotation of Cumbia one month, then heavy rotation of Banada/Norteno music. Also, throwing in some Spanish Pop music which doesn't seem to fit the format.

Regional Mexican is comparable to CHR... the blend varies according to what is currently a hit. Sometimes there is more banda and other times there is more norteña and sometimes a few cumbias are hot... or a couple of grupo ballads. It's just playing the hits.

...and according to the ARB rep I talked to yesterday, they're the only pubcaster in the country that's even in the top 10...

That's not true.

WAMU is #1 in DC on average.
KUOW is #1 in Seattle / Tacoma.
WERN is #3 in Madison, on average.
KUT is Top 5 in Austin, also on average.

And so on...

You're obviously not talking about me. I worked at KSOL 107.7, then owned by Richard Eaton's United Broadcasting, a chain of 19 stations. I also worked at KMUV-TV channel 31 in Sacramento, owned by Norman Lear of "All in the Family" fame. I also worked briefly at KXL in Portland, then owned by Lester Smith and Danny Kaye (no relation), a respected small group owner. Unless you feel that San Francisco, Portland, and Sacramento are not major markets...

Thanks for your support, skyrocker, I appreciate it. But to be fair, some "bags of hot air" of which you speak can and do contribute truly memorable points of view to an otherwise snarky world. And some nifty (if not totally original) melodies too. For example, here's an esteemed talent who has been heard on radio for decades in markets coast to coast and who also fits the profile:

Ok, David E. Then the ARB rep, who sold in LA for years just flat out lied to us in a presentation.

Or you may have misunderstood the point they were making. Or they were misinformed.

The fact stands that there are quite a few non-coms "pubcasters" in the top 10 across the country. I gave you just a few examples.

In terms of Ratings, they seem to go back and forth. Lately, KMVQ 997 NOW has stayed ahead of KYLD WiLD 949.

In the CHR core, 18-34 women, KYLD is still a bit ahead of KMVQ, but is declining.

The 18-34 female leader is KMEL, about 35% ahead of either of these other two.

I'm guessing 18-34 female likes Urban Music :-/

Some do, some like pop based CHR, some like rhythmic CHR, some like country, some like Regional Mexican or Hot AC.

Or maybe it is because KMEL is a well programmed radio station? I am just saying considered it is one of the few actual urban contemporary radio stations left in a major US radio market. Surprisingly, it is owned by Clear Channel.

Amazingly KMEL has managed to maintain its female component of the audience even though their playlist is 80% male artists, given the station has more male listeners than female. Now the only change I'd like KMEL to make is the voiceover: eliminate Eric Edwards and bring in either Rick Party or Bill Travis for an upgrade.

KMEL does an amazing job with this overall audience composition. They do spin many contemporary R&B songs, but truly lacking in the category of neo-soul music which many contemporary female artists are these days. However, they do spin many of these very records during the "KMEL Lounge" slow jams show.
