Bay Area Radio Mascots?

A question was posed to me via email, and I thought I'd run it past everyone here...

Has any major Bay Area radio station ever used a dressed-up mascot for live events? Sure KMEL used a "camel" in its promotions, bumper stickers and television ads back in the day, and KLIV had "Norman" the surfer dude on stickers and music surveys, but did any station actually employ a live human being dressed in a goofy outfit during station remotes?

And no, KFRC's Virgin Sturgeon doesn't count!

DJ

KYLD had an "Atomic Dog" mascot. it would make appearances at sticker stops, bomb concerts, and community events.

In the mid-1980s, when KUIC (Vacaville) was known as "Quick 95," they had a road-runner as mascot for remotes
(a roadrunner-logo was also on their bumperstickers, wearing headphones).

KMEL did have a blow up camel. And for KRQR's "Wolf"..are you thinking of their previous incarnation (they went by their frequency) when they were (I think) "The Monster "?

Of course, X-100 had the giant radio (which I wanted to call "The X Box"..but was shot down cause it made now sense to them back in 1989! I was just ahead of my time :). KFRC, for a short time, had "Mr. KFRC", who was dj Jim Bridges. he would go out and randomly hand out money to people.

"FM 99.7, KFRC-FM" (anyone remember that redundant slogan?)

They had a dog, King Dog was his name. I remember 'he' would appear at live remotes. I saw him at the annual Fleet Week celebration.

KRQR's wolf was on a billboard along 880 and also on the "Continuous Rocker Club" member cards. I don't know if it ever made public appearances. Also, The Lobster (aka Paul Wells) did some TV ads in a lobster costume but don't know if he was ever seen in public like that.

Say, do you remember the time when X-100 had their "X-Box" remote at the
Napa Town And Country Fair in 1989? Napa's KVYN-FM 99.3 had the IDENTICAL
boom box radio no more than 100 feet from yours on the main concourse of
the fairgrounds!! In the promotional mentions, KVYN called our remote unit,
"Big Red." Same looks as KXXX-FM's, but obviously with different logos on the
front/back, and on the "handle" atop the structure.

Up in Sacramento the old K-108 had the Mellow Beaver. The station was owned by Brown Broadcasting, the same people who owned KGB.
You may remember they had the KGB Chicken. Because of Ted Giannoulas' lawsuit with KGB (Which somehow the station lost even though he didn't invent it) they never kept the same guy in the suit for more than a year or so. Guess they didn't want to lose their mascot there as well. The last incarnation of the Beaver suit was truly beautiful. It was made for K-108 by the same costumers who did Icecapades costumes. But summers in Sacramento really took their toll on the guys inside. They would emerge dehydrated and usually a few pounds lighter...

I wasn't there, but I remember hearing about that. X-100 was suppose to have the rights within a 500 mile radius. Apparently not!

That thing was a bitch to drive and keep clean. I think a Spanish station bought it after X-100 ended. Who knows where it is today!
