Bay Area Radio Predictions for 2008

Here are my 2008 Bay Area Radio Predictions.

1. KFRC will flip to the Jones Radio Network's "Good Time Oldies" format.

2. The syndicated "John Boy and Billy" morning show will finally come to
The Bay Area

3. KLOK will be sold to Clear Channel and become an Adult Standards station.

4. KTRB will flip to "Classic Country." Wasn't KTRB a Classic Country station when
they were located in Modesto?

5. KBAY will re-name itself "B94.5" and will flip to Hot AC with the slogan "B94.5...Today's
Modern Hit Alternative."

Now your 2008 Radio predictions?

Over the last decade, "Classic Soul" - now called "Old School," that is - 60s and 70s soul music has wormed its way into practically every radio format. It's Oldies! It's Classic Hits! It's Light Rock! It's Smooth Jazz (??!)

But you don't hear Old School in one format, hence my prediction for 2008:

KDFC 102.1 FM - Classical Music and Classic Soul. The Bay Area's station for Mozart and Motown

1. Imus mornings 3AM-5AM on KSFO.

2. Citadel gives Ronn Owens a syndie deal.

3. KFRC flips to Fresh FM.

4. KTRB decides to bring in local programming, and move Glenn Beck or Laura Ingraham live to morning drive.

What will happen to Bernie Ward in 2008?

I agree ... Imus on KSFO from 3-5 soon, just like on KABC. However, I also have an inkling that he'll end up 6-9 on KTRB ... talk or country (especially with the way Imus is doing so much for RFD-TVs image.)

I see Christine Craft (now out in Sacramento) doing Bernie Ward's 10-1 on KGO.

"Then flips KDFC to KQQQ, Q102!"

Too bad you can't do 5 letter calls, then it would be KQQQQ - and they would call it "Four-Q"

I can see Bobby Ocean doing the imaging in that distinct whisper of his - "Four cyuuuuuu"...then a voice would answer "same to you, buddy."

Seriously though - KDFC is getting even higher overall (12 and up) ratings lately...#3 in the latest Arbitrons, behind only KGO and KOIT. I don't see Entercom messing with KDFC in any way. They might try to make Bill Lueth a saint, though.

I know - they could put KQQQ on 95.7 and call it "Q-95.7." That would be original.

Being a native of The South, the good old boys redneck humor of John Boy & Bill willnot go over well in The Bay Area. Espically in The City By The Gay Bay-San Francisco ::)

Top 40 FINALLY RETURNS TO THE BAY AREA!!!!!!!!!!
Q 95.7 Today's Hit Music!
or
Q 102 San Fran's #1 Hit Music Station!
or
Q 106 (106.9) All The Hits!!!!!!!

"KSFO and KYA FM come back as oldies, KFRC and KLIV top-40, K-101 MOR and KLOK comes back as what ever it was."

KLOK was "Yes/No Radio" - the greatest format ever - that pretended to play only the songs people voted "Yes" on, and reject the "No"s

But you're stuck in the 80s. Why not the original MOR format for KSFO? Don Sherwood's not available, but maybe we could coax Jim Lange out of retirement...assuming he has the time to spare after hosting the revival of "The New Dating Game - Geriatric Edition" on ABC daytimes.

Aw comon'

It's fun to read all of the ---

"I want my CHR" postings every year....

Okay everyone....close your eyes, clack those ruby slippers together and say....

"There's no place like San Francisco with a CHR/Pop Station"

Maybe it'll come true!

None of these things will happen until older folks (age 50+) start buying LOTS of stuff -- and I mean iPods, hot cars, hot fashions, etc. And they've got to start going to movies and concerts. They have to hit the dance clubs and the amusement parks. In short, the 50+ers have to act like 25-year olds or the ad agencies aren't going to pay attention. And if the agencies don't pay attention the stations won't, either.

When I was a pup there were just 3 commercial TV networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC. If we wanted to watch TV we watched one of those or settled for *really* old movies on the independent stations or Japanese brush painting lessons on KQED. So, we'd sit through network TV we didn't care for in order to see later shows that we did like. That's the same with top-40. People sat through folkies Peter, Paul & Mary singing the dreadful "I'm In Love With A Big Blue Frog" in order to hear the Animals do something cool like "Monterey" later.

Well, the 3-network system isn't coming back and top-40 isn't coming back, either.

(1) KTRB gets sold to a Jesuscaster.

(2) KGO cuts a deal to LMA an FM and simulcasts their talk, possibly one of the CCU stations.

(3) Entercom will ditch some of their smaller market stations and acquire another FM in the Bay Area to re-create the success they once had with KITS (Live 105) and the 18 to 34 male trendoid group. I see it as a "straight male" answer to KNGY Energy 92.7.

(4) Two money-losing Bay Area AM stations will be put on the market but will ultimately shut down for lack of buyers.

(5) Dr. Dean Edell and Premiere will fail to reach a contract agreement and Premiere will cancel his show. KGO will pick him up again and syndicate him, ultimately giving him a better deal than he had with Premiere.

(6) ABC Radio Networks will realize the mistake they made in signing Fred Thompson to replace Paul Harvey and will buy out the contract. They will then offer the job to Gil Gross when PH retires.

(7) There will be further consolidation of California NPR radio pubcasters with an operator such as KQED or KCRW running a California network of stations in the Central Valley and other places where pubcaster revenue is down.

... but (if so) they don't get it right (just as with "Duh Woof"), and it founders. Entercom of today has a real shortage of talented and motivated station manglement, if the stories I hear from a couple recently-former employees are true.

Welcome to the other side.

From what I hear their country format is doing better than Bonneville's attempt on the same station a few years ago. But I hear tell that Entercom really wants a younger audience than what country brings in. It's funny how a company's culture can change seemingly overnight. When Entercom owned KITS staffers there had glowing things to say about them. Now?

Two things about that...

1. It's not the same Entercom... it's not just a bunch of Philly Lawyers' tax shelter any more; it's a public company now. The manglement at the high level is different than in 1987-2000.

2. The local manglement is TOTALLY different than the Pat McNally - Richard Sands - Steve Masters axis that gave us Live 105. Those guys had some vision and music smarts. The Wolf's gang seem to just be doing what they're told in a desultory way.

1.) Entercom, Clear Channel or CBS will look at a PPM-freindly rock format for one of their lagging products.

2.) KBWF will hire a new morning show that has Country P-1 appeal and focus the station on the Country lifegroup in San Jose/Fremont/Contra Costa.

3.) KFRC will adopt the WCBS and WOGL format and become a true oldies station and bail on Classic Hits.

4.) Clear Channel will bring in the RADIO or MY format to either K101 or Kiss.

5.) Sean Hill will become the 49'ers starting quarterback. (Sorry)

What would make a format PPM-friendly, exactly?

That would make sense, at least. What would such a show have, to make it appeal to that demo? And what was "Y'all-ternative" aiming at?
