All meant to tied in together with the 'BBC LDN' news program that airs on BBC ONE. There's the matching website at bbc.co.uk/ldn
But it dropped 'LDN' to go to the full word version of London. BBC ONE idents were branded as 'BBC ONE LDN' but now read 'BBC ONE LONDON'. This new service came into affect after the London & South East Region's were split apart in 2000, if I recall correctly.
EDIT: They do play music as well. There is a list of recently added songs to their playlist.
