BBC News Mark Lowen Detained and Deported from Turkey

Mark Lowen was covering the protests in Turkey when he was ordered detained and deported by the country's law enforcement.

This is happening in the US now with reporters at the VOA:

They are temporarily saved because of a judge's injunction.

But I would expect to see more of this if foreign journalists cover any political demonstrations here. Or if they simply ask the president a question he doesn't like. Then there will be retaliation by the countries affected. We could see US journalists deported from the UK.

The problem with those articles, one of which is an opinion piece, is that neither takes into account that all those broadcast services are outdated and outmoded. Based principally on the dead shortwave bands and the use of distant AM signals, all of which can be and are blocked by the more authoritarian regimes, the VOA and its associated services has not found a way to be effective today.

But the journalists aren't being fired because of the outdated platform. They're being targeted because of their reporting. It's about the content of what they're saying, which is why the BBC reporter was deported from Turkey. Our president admires the president of Turkey, and wants to emulate him here. So how Turkey treats the media is very likely to be copied here regardless of the technology.
