BBC World Service Equipment Auction

The BBC World Service, downsized as it is, is moving from Bush House to the "Big House". They are auctioning off excess equipment inventory.

Here's a link to the auction site. Some photos are on the home page, Click "View Lot Catalogue" at the upper right to see specifics:

There must have been a lot of history passing through those mikes and consoles. And, several of the mikes look like they have seen a lot of history, too. ;)

I just e-mailed the BBCShop people, asking if they have considered selling any mementos.

I think it would be cool to have an acrylic box with a piece of the wallpaper or studio acoustical material, with a photo, BBC-WS logo and a certificate of authenticity, for sale. For those who don't get a mike or something, at least.

Out of all the stuff listed I'd like to have an EMT Turntable. It would probably cost a fortune to ship it here though.

The AKG 414EB microphones should bring a fair price especially if they have the original brass capsules, thought to be better than the replacement teflon ones.

I should point this out for those who have never seen or understand BBC equipment. Much of it (esp. in the old days) was built exclusively for the BBC...it is some of the best and durable audio gear you will find! BBC had/has an in-house audio lab that has helped to develop some amazing stuff! I know of several recording studios here in the States who have lots of surplus BBC radio equipment in use.

I will need to see how much they go for, but a lot of the monitors and mics look exquisite and as said earlier, lots of news stories broadcast to hundreds of millions of people have gone through this stuff!

Radio-X

For me a matched pair of Rogers and an EMT950 ;D

Looking at that stuff makes me feel like a kid in a candy store... reminds me the day that I collected my broadcast gear on a transmitter plant warehouse. Not auction... I made an offer and it was accepted. 200$ for 600 pounds of gear.

As I looked at those photos, I realized that a "one of these days" trip to tour the legendary BBC Bush House is something I can remove from my "Bucket List".

Sad :'(
