BBM chooses PPM: Who encodes in Bellingham?

BBM - Canada is choosing to use Arbitron's PPM system across all major Canadian radio and TV markets for ratings purposes. In Vancouver, this made me wonder - how will "Praise" KWPZ encode for both Seattle-Tacoma and Victoria and Vancouver BBMs? I know they currently show near the bottom of S-T ratings so they are encoding like sister KCMS. As for Vic-Van, they've been a subscriber to the diaries.

Any thoughts?

KAFE or KISM going to encode for the Canadian service? They are not showing anywhere in Seattle-Tacoma, leading me to believe that Saga chose not to encode the "Bellingham market."

I believe that most of the US stations selling North of the Border have been sent packing. Just as with ad dollars, British Columbia and Canada have pretty well locked down ratings measurement to everything Canada only.

Bellingham is stuck on a tiny island between Seattle and BC. As with other small markets, I doubt domestic PPM will be used there for a few years especially because Bellingham isn't a ranked market.

Actually KWPZ 106.5 does show up in the Vancouver BBM's, this past Spring they had a 1.4 share based mostly on the strength from their following in the Fraser Valley (aka-the bible belt). They are not a factor in Vancouver itself due to interference from CKAV 106.3. KISM 92.9 & KAFE 104.3 haven't had any impact up here for years. In fact their significance has diminished even further since CKYE 93.1 & CHHR 104.1 hit the air making reception of the two Bellingham stations virtually impossible locally.

Yes, that was by the old diary method. The first PPM won't happen until this Fall up here. I haven't heard anything about the status of U.S. border stations in our PPM's, but I will attempt to find out.

We're all very anxious to see if the PPM's will stir things up locally as they have done in Seattle, ie-will Vancouver's JACK FM come back from the (near) dead? Will our perennial market leaders CKNW & CBU with their News-Talk formats get dethroned? Will Oldies 104.9 become a force despite being a virtual no-show with the diary method? etc. etc. Should be interesting.

I found something that might shed some light on the question at hand here. I noticed in the Detroit PPM's that stations from Windsor are included:

Looking at it the other way, one can only assume when (and if) the PPM's come to Windsor they will have to include Detroit stations as Windsor is really just a Canadian suburb of Detroit when it really boils down to it.

Is it possible that the Canadian stations in Windsor sub to Arbitron because they want to be able to push advertising to the US mainland???

How does that work anyways? since the stations would have to have Arbitron PPM encoders in their racks at the canadian stations in Windsor????

Will the BBM PPM Devices they give out to folks pick up a signal and decode from an Arbitron installed PPM Encoder in a US station??

That would be my question.

I don't think it's going to have much impact regardless in Bellingham where every commercial station (save KWPZ) is owned by the same conglomerate.

I think if you really want to go for that approach, wouldn't making Northwest WA (from Everett to Vancouver, perhaps including Victoria/Vancouver Island) it's own PPM territory work better?

There's listeners of Vancouver stations south of the border and Northwest WA stations north of the border as well. It's pretty much it's own market.......

Highly possible Bellingham may crack the Top 100....

The "blue man" (a guy who is taking a self-made silver compount for some health reason) appeared on Today and said Bellingham WA is the best place in the world for the best health care (not sure if border proximity played into his reasoning). He argued that people there are terrific and it's one of the best places in the country to retire.

So THAT ought to boost the 92.9 core demographic!!!
