BCS FOOTBALL GAME SCORES RECORD TOUCHDOWN FOR ESPN

from TV BY THE NUMBERS

Nielsen reports that the audience was the largest in the HISTORY of cable TV (records go
back to 2001).

The game drew huge audiences in the teams’ markets – Birmingham, Ala. (67.0) and Portland, Ore. (37.5). Rounding out the top five were Nashville (28.8 ) , New Orleans (28.6) , and Knoxville (27.7).

AND WHAT A GAME IT WAS!!!!

It may have been a winner in the ratings but it capped off a lousy overall bowl season as a football game. Neither team looked as if they'd practiced in months and neither showed, with a very few exceptions, why they deserved to be in the so-called title game. In short, it looked like a typical Super Bowl (without the entertaining commercials).

How greedy is ESPN anyways? I noticed that only one bowl game was on over-the-air TV this year. That was the Cotton Bowl on FOX.

I thought it was a GREAT game. They were both so evenly matched it made for a good game.

How many times were they stopped at the 1 yard line?
How often do you see a receiver go over someone's back, get back up and run?
Even the last minute was exciting. These teams deserved to be there more than any others.

I think we better get used to it espn is a monster and here to stay and 32 of the 35 bowl games were on espn and espn 2 the other three were on broadcast tv.

Besides the (sponsor would like me to mention its name) Cotton Bowl, there was also
the (sponsor would like me to mention its name) Sun Bowl on CBS, plus an unknown
third entrant alluded to by teevee, whose sponsor I'm sure would like to be mentioned. ;D

If more people would refuse to pay massive amounts of money to the cable and satelite companies (who are ripping the customers off) maybe we could get some decent football on local TV again. It was always a New Year tradition to watch football. Now you get maybe one or two games if your''e lucky. We used to have a game on nearly every channel all day long. Now we eat our black eyed peas and watch informercials. Damn you ESPN. I refuse to pay for football.

Greedy? They're a business making a good decision for the bottom line. You know, that thing called capitalism.

Well it seems to have worked for ESPN. I wouldn't call the largest cable audience
in cable history an embarrassment. They are trying to compete with the big boys.

They are one of the big boys now. Enough of this ridiculous notion that ESPN is inferior because they don't broadcast over the air. From an advertiser's perspective -- and that's what matters the most -- what's inferior about targetting people who are (theft aside) paying to watch the programming?

And it was indeed an outstanding game last night.

Hey, Venus - there's always the NHL "Winter Classic"... :)

+1 to this. With ESPN being available in practically every household that subscribes to sat/cable plus the ability to command (demand?) $4+/mo for each sub definitely tells me that they are not some upstart channel.

They do have a point that we PAID to watch this game, but this is America and if
you can get somebody to pay today for what was free yesterday, that's the American
way.

And the games fluctuated in viewership when they were on broadcast. This one is among the top 3 of all BCS title games, OTA or cable.

I watched it illegally. ESPN can go pee up a frozen rope.

I used to until we got access to ESPN3 via our isp last year. Now its nice not to have to try and find another working feed if the game I'm watching cuts out. Especially since we ditched pay-tv in late '09 to save money.

The USA Today article goes on to say that the 11% down is probably due to the fact that
both teams are from lower population areas.

I'm sure they never expected this game to pull out the numbers a Texas - Florida game
would.

Not to mention the 5 or so million people who would've watched but can't because they don't have cable. That's lots of eyeballs to throw away.
