Bea Arthur (Maude, Golden Girls) dead at 86

There's quite a reunion going on up in heaven right now with Bea; Estelle Getty, who played her Golden Girlsw tv mom and died last year; Herb Edelman (her GG ex, Stan); Richard Mulligan, her Empty Nest neighbor; and Carroll O'Connor, who played Archie Bunker. Maude was a spinoff of All In The Family.

Sounds like a great cast for a tv show. ;D

I don't think God'll get you for that. :)

I'm sure He won't get her; she'll be there
to make Him laugh.

Steve Allen once recalled a time on his
Sunday-night show when Lou Costello
(after his breakup with Bud Abbott) was
guest and was in a sketch set in a hospital.
Watching the show years later, Steve suddenly
recognized the bossy nurse in the sketch--none
other than Bea herself.

I remember her first appearance on "All In The
Family," when she came to help Edith take care
of an ailing Archie. I can't remember the exact
line, but she told him he could get up and eat or
lie there and live on his fat; if he chose the latter
he'd be around a long time. I wonder how many
people (and remember, "Maude" wasn't even on
the drawing boards yet) watched that show and
said to themselves, "They've got to give her
her own show."

Bea Arthur's portrayal of Maude was magnificent. One of the all time great TV characters.

i never liked her on Maude, but she was GREAT on Golden Girls though, a very well written tv comedy. she had a way of delivering those zingers.

I never cared that much for the Golden Girls, but I do agree with you on the zingers.

Never liked Maude as a kid but loved it when I grew up. I remember it taking place in Tuckahoe.
Maude's another show you never see reruns of anymore. :-[ I'd watch it in a heartbeat over any reality gar-bage that's out today.

Sad to hear Bea is gone. I still watch Maude every once in awhile..on tape that is.

The website Findadeath.com, last year on their forums did a survey for their members on who will pass on in 2008 and I believe Bea Arthur was in the top 10 and as of yet the only one who actually did die.

Others on the that top 10 list as I seem to recall were Dick Clark, Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett, Larry Storch, Ken Barry, Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Mathers and Olivia Newton-John. Interesting Ed McMahon didnt make that "list" even though I heard on the news recently he is in very bad health.

I have seen recent pics of both Dick Clark and Patrick Swayze and sadly both do look bad though as they say..they are beating the odds. Fawcett I have heard the rumors about her cancer but who really knows. Storch, I saw him a few years back on You Tube and while he really does look his age, he is still funny as ever.

The others I haven't heard that they are in that bad of health so maybe they were just guesses on the part of the members of Find-a-death, come to think of it didn't Olivia beat cancer?

Hopefully all of them will live to see 2010, 2011, 2012 and so forth even though I do have my doubts about Clark & Swayze..I hope I am wrong about that though.

Much better than the garbage that's out today.

"Maude" and "The Golden Girls" were both great shows. Bea Arthur was perfect for the parts she played in both shows. It also didn't hurt that the writing on both shows was absolutely brilliant. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet in the forum, but Susan Harris, who created "The Golden Girls," also happened to be the writer of the controversial abortion episode of "Maude."

...for whatever it's worth, One Day at a Time is the only Norman Lear '70s sitcom that hasn't had one of its regular cast members die since the original run. All in the Family, Sanford & Son, The Jeffersons, Good Times, The Hot L Baltimore, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Fernwood 2Night, America 2Night, All That Glitters, All's Fair -- all have regular cast members in TeeVee Heaven...

...feelin' any older today? ;-( ...

No, but Mackenzie Phillips came close a couple of times.

I thought Valerie Bertinelli was hot back then (and she was!) But how about Val in that green bikini on the cover of People a few weeks ago?

I guess Jenny Craig really works, huh? ;D You know, if you watch her back in her One Day at a Time days. she was relatively skinny as a kid, but she had those pudgy chipmunk cheeks that are often a sign that a woman is going to probably battle weight gain as she gets older. Even when she was fighting the flab, though, she never lost that facial cuteness. Most women pushing 50 would kill to still have a face like that.
