Can't say I can think of ANY Beachboys songs I'd consider dark rock, but weren't several members of the group hanging with Charles Manson in the late 60s? Rumor has it he even wrote some songs the BB performed (though songwriting credit was given to group members). Maybe some of their albums of that era might have what you're looking for (Smiley Smile, Friends, Wild Honey, etc.).

America's Group's groundbreaking work

The albums after BEACH BOYS TODAY and SUMMER DAYS AND SUMMER NIGHTS, from 1965, are considered BRIAN WILSON's/ THE BEACH BOYS' greatest in terms of quality, lyrics and music.

The LPs right after PET SOUNDS, the era of 1966-1970, have some of the SMILE elements.
Those LPs are PET SOUNDS, SMILE, WILD HONEY, FRIENDS, 20/20, SUNFLOWRE, SURF'S UP.

Such as these groundbreaking songs:

"Do You Like Worms?"
"Plymouth Rock Roll Over"
"Heroes & Villians"
"Till I Die"
"Cabinnessence"

All of those and many more (you've heard the unrealeased tracks) are more in the STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER/ GOOD VIBRATIONS mode- charting new water.

They should have been released.

Big Beach Boy's fan here.

One of my all time favorite albums by the BB's is Holland - which as I recall Rolling Stone named "Album of the Year" - favorite song, actually three California Saga with lyrics by Van Dyke Parks - then of course Sail On Sailor is on that as well. Part one of the Saga has to rate as one of the all time water songs, as well as California songs ever made.

I was very disappointed to find so little of the album included in the Beach Boys boxed cd set "Good Vibrations." Have to rip the songs off vinyl.

Surf's Up is another classic.

Those CDs are pretty much available. I've seen them in stores.

I've also seen many in public libraries, which I rip to my computer.

The rumor is "Never Learn Not To Love" on 20/20 was a Charles Manson composition. It's a spooky song eithier way!

Wild Honey is a great "blue eyed soul" record. Friends has some crazy songs on it, but they're mostly quite light. Smiley Smile is a record I play a lot. It's not really heavy, but parts of it get dark. It's a crazy crazy record! Pretty much all the Beach Boys LPs from All Summer Long through Holland are pretty damn good.

There's sometimes a pretty fine line between genius & insanity. Didn't he go several years without leaving his bed and/or turn his living room into a sandbox or was that just urban legend?

He built a sandbox in his house and stuck his piano in the middle of it for "inspiration" around the time of Smile. He would also set up a tent in his living room and "go camping"!! It was sometime in the early '70's that he stayed in bed for 3 or 4 years. He thought Phil Spector was sending him secret messages in his records. And ultimately, he scrapped Smile in the first place beacuse while he was recording the track "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Fire)" (with everyone in the studio decked out in plastic fireman's hats) several large fires started in Los Angeles and other parts of the world...Brian thought his music was responsible for this!!

Brian Wilson has set the standard for rock'n'roll insanity for decades, but he is doing MUCH better these days!!

I read his biography "Wouldn't it be nice?" a few years ago. It was incredible. Yes, it is true that Brian became a recluse for about 15 - 20 years from the very late 60s through the early 80s.

I saw the Beach Boys in 1981 and Brian was - incredibly - on stage with them. They made a big deal about him being there. But he was just... there. Sitting at a keyboard and kinda mumbling (probably with the mic off) to the music. It was strange, though the show itself was pretty good.

Brian's madness, if you will, had a lot to do with his extremely overbearing father Murray. Apparently Murray was very jealous of the talent Brian possessed and hated rock and roll. But he could hardly deny that the Beach Boys were successful.

One incident that Brian writes about has always stuck in my mind because it's so perverse. He claims that part of his father's emotional abuse was to make Brian use the living room floor to relieve himself. Disgusting and wierd. Murray Wilson was a freak, but Brian is a genius.

Beach Boys/Manson

"Never Learn Not To Love" from 20/20 was an uncredited Manson song which Dennis Wilson re-wrote. Manson's version was "Cease to Exist." Wilson changed that in the lyrics to "Cease to resist." Excellent record (The Beach Boys version),
but on the dark side. BTW MANY years ago I was researching song copyrights
and found many being owned by the Beach Boys publishing company, Brother Publishing. The songwriters weren't members of the band, but I recognized some of the names -- they were members of the Manson Family.

P.S. The Beach Boys are my favorite group and Brian Wilson is my favorite producer.

The Beach Boys have always been my favorite group. Brian Wilson is most certainly a musical genius. Paul McCartney has oftened said that the inspiration behind the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" LP was the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds," released a year earlier. Even then, the execs at Capitol Records wanted to drop them from the label because they "didn't hear a hit!"

I've seen them in concert dozens of times over the years and had the good fortune of attending what turned out to be the very last live Beach Boys concert that featured all three Wilson brothers, July 4, 1983 on the Pier at Atlantic City. Dennis Wilson drowned later that year. Carl passed away after a long battle with lung cancer in 1998. It's truly ironic that Brian is the last surviving member of the Wilson family.

Ah yes, good old "Dickie-Boy." Wasn't he involved in some controversy which forced him to leave CBS-FM?
