Beacon Journal: (WZKL-FM) apologizes after retardation skit

ALLIANCE, Ohio - A northeast Ohio radio station has ended a running contest in which listeners won prizes for singing songs as if they were mentally retarded after advocates for the disabled protested.
WZKL-FM in Alliance on Wednesday pulled the "Name That Tune with Mongoloid Mike" contest, which aired for seven months.

"It was not our intent to hurt anyone, but to merely entertain as we try to do 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Program Director John Stewart. The on-air personality known as "Igor" who hosted the contest also apologized on the air Wednesday night, saying he has a cousin with Down syndrome.
 
Glad they apologized. I'm glad they are getting back under control...


Not going to name another radio station in the same market that has no control..
 
Apology not accepted. That was embarassing, immature and irresponsible.
 
And it was around for 6 months. If anyone listening had a problem, it would have been yanked earlier.

Hell, if anyone in Alliance had a problem, it would have been yanked.

As it was, it took someone somewhere SIX FRIGGIN' MONTHS to manufacture outrage.

But, much like the old Radio-Info, Q92 appears to be a favorite target.

If anyone feigning outrage at this EVER defended Howard Stern's activities, your standing to complain just ended.
 
This is like the old rhetorical question "If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" I never heard the bit, as I live out of the listening area, so I didn't comment. I however never didn't like Howard Stern using Gary the Retard for his show, but I wasn't one of his regular listeners either. I have always felt that the radios have tuners was so if you didn't like what was on them you could change the station.

Get a life! Remember something caled "free speech?" As long as they do not violate FCC rules, they should be able to say anything they want. If you don't like it, there are two buttons to take advantage of. One turns the power off and the other changes the station.

Tcsnrayp you never heard this bit. You only read about it and based your information on third party information. Why weren't you complaining six months ago?

I love when radio people complain about what other radio people talk about, when they haven't even heard the broadcast in question.

Are they are saying things you don't like? Boo Hoo Hoo. Go change the station and cry yourself to sleep.

From what I heard the hellfire started when someone from OUT OF STATE began spouting off to people locally. Where was everyone for the last six months? Why weren't you whiners whining back then? I am sure that in the last six months, thousands of people heard that bit. Only when someone without better things to do begins whining do others jump on the bandwagon.

I like Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Dennis Leary, and Chris Rock. They make jokes about race, religion, gays, the disabled, etc. Millions of people enjoy like that type of humor. I could care less if you do not.

If anyone should fight for the right of free speech, it is broadcasters. The only thing that pisses me off about WZKL is that they said they were sorry. Management was not sorry until the heat got turned up. They are typical radio cowards.
