On another thread K6JHU linked to a map showing beacons on 50MHz. There was also discussion of beacons on 144 MHz.

The closest beacons to me are a couple VORs from PDX (both on 110-111 MHz) and an NDB from nearby Troutdale Airport (334 kHz, very loud). Doesn't look like there are any on 50 MHz near me. The closest on 50 are in Olympia and clear down in Medford.
Why would there be beacons located in the HAM bands? I have only heard of them being in longwave and the VHF aircraft band! Do other nations use those bands for aircraft communication?
