Beans & Rice & Rot?

I have never been a fan of him. Even though I am strongly in favor of a debt free lifestyle, he just rubs me the wrong way. Arrogant as hell, too much talibornagain religious dreck, and the callers...jeezus, where do they find these rubes? Doesn't surprise me that he is a jerk.

Bonneville could do the "right" thing and end that "gravy train" immediately. In the long run it would serve them better, in my opinion.

No doubt TMISU are monitoring the situation, and hoping they won't have to pull the plug. Ramsey fills five hours of their schedule weekdays, and whenever there's an opening to fill on the weekend. Plus there are a lot of KTAR advertisers who have hired Mr Beans & Rice as their pitchman. We're talkin' ratings and revenue here.

As the Nurse and I say....tough sledding in the desert.

Probably one of the most enlightening experiences in my career was when we had this "psychic" on our show. She was a nice old lady who (I think) maybe sincerely believed that she was psychic. The trick came from her phone screener - who was also her son and manager - and watching him work was a revelation. He was so good it was scary. He powered through the callers looking for someone that had a good story, was open to a little (or a lot) of suggestion/coaching, and the caller didn't get on the air until they were set up for the "psychic" to take a swing at. He knew what she would say, and that was the thing.

Any caller that didn't fit what he was looking for was carefully shoved off, and the ones that did were coached on what they should say. He led them down the primrose path so that she could dispense advice and wow the audience with her "insights."

I suspect that this is what's happening on some level with Ramsey. He's not picking up random phone lines. He's being fed callers that have a problem he can easily solve with a bit of cajoling and advice to be found in his "Financial Peace University" or whatever it's called.

I worked at one station where a "psychic" came in to do a show on the weekends. Apparently she left some printed material at the station and it went missing. She left a note in the staff break room, asking for help in locating the missing books.

And of course, somebody wrote on the note, "If you were really a psychic, you would have found them already!"

I contend it's more about the revenue than the ratings. But you're certainly correct with your assertion. :(

Be that as it may, KTAR's news team should've reported Ramsey's reckless super-spreader party. That was just flat-out irresponsible on their part.

It didn't happen in Phoenix. If it did, and he broke local rules, I'd agree. Otherwise they're reporting a story that has no relevance to the Phoenix audience other than it happens to pick on a guy who is heard on their station. Sure he was not too smart, but he didn't break the law. Masks are not required in his state. Nothing really wrong there. It sounds like finger pointing.

In a way, he's "playing the hits." Talk is a format, and successful talk is a formula. As for Dave berating people, I suspect that's by design. His phone screeners make sure that certain types of people with certain types of problems get through, and from there Dave can offer his advice, berate them if needed, and sell his program. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Yet there's something else happening here, if the article is to be believed. Ramsey is not just a successful talk host peddling a product, but a terrible boss being abusive to his employees.

I can't be the only one who read this and said "he fired someone for having premarital sex? In RADIO?"
Yep. Woman who had sex without a government license got pregnant and went to talk to HR about FMLA and Dave fired her. He also insists on a "spousal interview" for married employees. Ol' Dave has gotten plenty of corporate welfare from the state of Tennessee as well.

What some people are not realizing, some places spell out the rules and you have to agree to them.

I worked sales at a station. While they handed me enough active accounts to pay a commission equal to minimum wage, I was technically commission only. For the right to 'sell' the product, I had to agree to work certain hours, wear dress clothes and tie and there was a paragraph that said if I was found to be using illegal drugs, engaging in illegal activities, or got a DUI, for example, I was no longer a part of the station. The jocks only had the last part to agree to. I recall one jock, while still living in a motel with his wife, was let go because the cops were called out 3 times in a week because they were fighting and disturbing the peace.

A friend worked for a mega church. Part of the 'qualifications' was to become a member and regular attendee at church services. There was a clause than any portion of the employee's private life that would shed a bad light on the church was subject to immediate dismissal. My friend agreed to that and worked there several years. He liked the people he worked with. He said he was pretty good at reaching the goals they set for him (and the employees under him) and they almost always got a quarterly bonus. With the bonuses, he said the pay was pretty decent.

I'm not defending anyone, just saying some companies have some crazy requirements of their employees. If you agree to the rules, you shouldn't be shocked when something happens when you break the rules. I guess you could go to court, but why? If you win, you don't want to work for them and you'll likely never see any substantial money. I think most just go for another job where your personal life is not covered by the job description.

...just waiting for comments on the preferential treatment given Chris Hogan and how his ex wife was thrown under the Rice & Beans bus. Firing the worker who got pregnant without a government license is outrageous. Wonder if the dude who did the deed worked for Ramsey? Would he be fired as well? No doubt, this is one of the best places to work - just ask the employees who'd be fired if they disagreed.

I always read about how bad it is to work for corporate radio, but it's been my experience that small indie owners can be worse.

They sometimes develop authoritarian complexes and start thinking they're beyond reproach.

I'm with BT on this. As an employee you have to decide what's important.

All true, but pregnancy is covered as with a law that prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy, and Ramsey's organization is a secular employer employing more than 15 people, not a church or a para-church organization.

Well, Sturgis didn't happen in Phoenix either, yet KTAR reported on the spread that occurred there. They've reported on other "super-spreader" incidents nationally as well.

As I stated earlier, if Ramsey was on KFYI, make no mistake: KTAR would've indeed called it out.

"Picking" on Ramsey? Really? I strongly disagree with you on that but I get your point though. Respect.

I didn't say "picking," I said "finger pointing." They read the Sturgis story because it was covered by the news services. It wasn't to stick it to the bikers in town. They would have had to do their own independent news gathering to find the Ramsey story. It wasn't a super spreader, it was a private party. Two very different things. But hey, there are lots of people today reporting that Lou Dobbs got canned. Which local news staff covered it?

I have a feeling that 'ol Broom (Lunk)head will whine about Dobbs' firing come Monday morning. But I digress.

To clarify, I referred to your comment about KTAR not wanting to "pick on a guy who is heard on their station."

Whether a party is private or public, 1500 maskless people in close proximity of each other is flat-out irresponsible during a pandemic. I applaud those who have the spine to call him out on it.

Broomhead is just uneducated angry white guy rage radio. Sadly, this is Phoenix, there are a lot of lunkheads and oafs that eat this garbage up.

I believe the 23 states that refuse to have mask rules are irresponsible. They're the ones who should be called out.
Tennessee is one of them, and we seem to be hell bent on infecting everybody in the name of the economy. I guess people walk right out of that ICU, look at those hospital bills and promptly buy new cars

Oh, I don't disagree with your assertions LC. However, Lunkhead is working feverishly trying to convince KTAR listeners that he's a "moderate" and the "voice of reason" on-air. That's just plain laughable.

I disagree with one...the idea that Lunkhead (and I love that nickname) is an uneducated angry white guy. He knows exactly what he's doing. So does Chad Benson. So do The Men In Secret Underwear (in case anyone reading this thread don't get the acronym). And to circle back around to the subject of this discussion, so does Dave Ramsey.

This stuff works. Since the portable purple people eater meters have come into play, it doesn't matter if we all know that Dave and Mike and Chad are selling listeners a bill of goods. The data from the pagers says that what they're selling moves the digital needles. For the next four years (at least), it will behoove talk radio to express outrage at what's happening with the current administration, tell people they're supposed to be equally outraged, and sell them on a way to find "Financial Peace" along the way.

And of course they're going to frame it as "we're just the reasonable people trying to make sense of this all!" Meanwhile, if you land a job with Ramsey, don't cheat on your spouse (unless you have a book deal).
