Ah college days as a college nerd. I had an Olds which could get WNKS-FM in all but North Macon. I had a Delco radio and a stereo at home from Radio Shack. Using a portable radio got you no Bear O'Brian or Dr. Dave. In 1985-88 I could get WNKS and a morning crew which was more youth-friendly than anything in Macon. I remember Bear and Dr. Dave singing a "Wipeout" parody back in '87. Somewhere it's on tape in my vault. One singer went "wa wa wa" while Bear sang "we do it on our finger and we wipe it on the wa wa wa, wa wa waaa". Then there's the black voice character Willie Lee McGee. And yes, I remember "Christmas on Green Island" and "Christmas in Bibb City". The station was CHR until Rock 103.
Bear came to Q-106 in Macon and was sent packing. It seems he had a much racier repertoire than he exposed us to out of Columbus. Macon, compared to Columbus, was an overgrown hick town with Old South types who let the place rot away.
Whatever is killing popular music, and corporate nonsense, also killed off jocks such as O'Brien. Ipods and MP3 sharing/bootlegging have hurt radio, yes, but it fell on its sword.
FYI is Jimbo Martin related to the Martin dynasty which owned the present Carmike Cinemas, Johnny Reb Radio, and a drive-in in Milledgeville?
