Beatles lyric question

In "Revolution" (and its slow bluesy White Album version "Revolution 1"), John Lennon pronounces "evolution" with a long e ("e-volution" rather than "evv-olution").

I've never heard "evolution" pronounced with the long e anywhere than in this song. Is this the standard Brit pronounciation (like "organ-eye-zation" for "organization"/"organisation")?

From the below included website, it appears the correct British pronunciation is with the long /e/.
