Beaumont gets Kissed

From bad to worse.

I give it 6 months, like when KIOC was temporarily Hot 106 several years ago.

Not trying to hijack this thread but.. how long was KIOC "Powerhits" before they left the format to the current?

I think KIOC was Power Hits for several years. The 'Hot' experiment was not well received.

Actually, I've been listening to KKMY all morning. It's not as bad after several cups of coffee.

I used to get them regularly when I went to A&M in the late '80s (KTTX Brenham was still a class A on 106.3 then) and they were CHR competing against KZZB 95.1 "B95" during those years (which I used to also get regularly, along with KVIC Victoria as 95.1 was vacant then).

They shifted to CHR/rock "all rock, no rap" but still under the "Power Hits K106" handle in the fall of 1993. That evolved to a CHR/modern hybrid in 1996 as just "106-1 K106" that completely evolved by late 1996 to modern rock "New Rock 106-1, K106." That didn't last too long as they shifted to dance "Hot 106" in 1997, which also was fairly brief before switching to "Big Dog 106."

If I remember correctly, Ken Stephens owned KIOC and KTUX in Shreveport and ran pretty much the same format on both of them. It seems like it was March '93 when KTUX went from top-40 to rock-40 as "Tux 99 Rocks." An old friend of mine left KMYZ Tulsa in '90 for KTUX as he was offered afternoons at KTUX and was nights at "The Hot New Z-104.5." I never heard much from him after that, but I always heard Stephens was basically a good guy. He sold KTUX and KIOC to, I believe, Gulfstar in the mid-90's, which got absorbed into Capstar/AMFM and later to Clear Channel.

KTUX shifted in late 1992...about a year before KIOC shifted in the fall of 1993. KTUX was a little more classic rock-heavy. KTUX went full AOR as "99X, the Rebel Rocker" in June 1994.

1992-1993 saw a lot of CHRs shift to hot AC or, in these parts, to rock 40s (KMYZ Tulsa, KKYK Little Rock, KTUX, KIOC, KEGL Dallas). All of those evolved into AORs or modern rock outlets.

???

I am sure that if CC does as they are doing all over the country, KKMY will eventually become KLVI-FM. Unless all of a sudden the station takes off and the ratings go through the roof.
