Beaumont Gets Two Spanish Stations -- Impact on Houston's Spanish Radio?

1450 AM and 1510 AM in Beaumont are planning to -- or already have -- gone Spanish.

Other than the on-again/off-again 1150 AM in Port Arthur, these would be the first full-time Spanish signals originating in the Golden Triangle, I believe.

Beaumont seems to already be super-served by Spanish radio from Houston, judging by the ratings.

Interesting to see if 1450 and 1510 will make an impact.

Except for KLVI 560, and perhaps KOGT 1600, AM radio in the Golden Triangle is a decrepit mess. Owners are pretty much grasping at straws.

Interesting to see if 1450 and 1510 will make an impact.

Like a gnat on the front of an 18-wheeler doing 70.

Curious as to where you got that info......
BTW 1150 is licensed to Port Neches, not Port Arthur...IN FACT, 98.5 and 93.3 ARE licensed to Port Arthur and though they are trying to be Houston stations, they already serve the BPT area with a stereo spanish signal (so does 107.9 licensed to Beaumont anyway).

1450's signal has degraded over the last 20-30 years...when I worked at KAYC in the 70s, you could HEAR 1450 in PA at 250watts night....now even at a 1KW, it doesnt make it half way south....even INSIDE Beaumont's city limits, 1450 has signal issues (along with constant drop outs of the transmitter carrier during daytime...I have heard it more than once driving through BMT; geesh).

1510 is daytime only.....protects WLAC, Nashville at night. USED to love hearing KYKR AM sign off and WLAC with Top40 boom in during the 70s...but now? Who cares. 1510 is currently doing a black gospel format...so is 990 but neither sounds worth a [EDIT] !!!!! Their audio is pitifully LOW and weak....carrier on 990 barely covers BMT too...for a 1KW Class B, that shows how BAD the engineering (or lack of) is at that station...but then Martin doesnt care about it anyway.

The switch to Spanish is supposed to happen Monday April 16 -- tomorrow.

You are correct CW: 1150 is licensed to Port Neches. The former KPNG hasn't served Mid County as a local since at least the very early 70's when a variety of religious operators took over.

As for the deterioration of the signals on 990, 1450 and 1510 -- so sad and so true. What was once KTRM at 990 and KCAW at 1510 (daytimer) put out great signals across all of Jefferson County in their day.

And when I was in high school in the late 60's, I remember KAYC 1450 was as loud in Port Arthur at night as KOLE 1340 (also 250 watts at the time). That was when both of them battled it out for the Top 40 music audience, with KLVI - known then as K-56 and Beaumont's Friendly Giant - joining the Top 40 competition during the same period.

Guess CUMEless couldnt figure out something else to do..but with BOTH 1510 and 1450 carrying the same format, thats a waste too......
Heck when I was jocking at KAYC in the 70s, it would cover PA at 250 at night and we had plenty of listeners...more than KLVI with 5kw since one of the nulls went right down the local drag on Gulfway (still does but not as bad for some reason these days)...and I even worked at KLVI when we were Top40/Baxter (in the morning who drove off all our listeners)...I still have the "shotgun" ID on cart somewhere that sung "56.....K L V I" we used a bit back then...AHH the good old days...(glad I DONT have my old airchecks from back then...I do from KAYC though on cassette)

It must be the ground systems havent been kept up...last time I noticed, 1450 had some problems at sundown right at the western edge of Beaumont in I 10...egads!!! In Groves, the 1450 in Crowley could be heard OVER the former KAYC now..(and the Crowley 1450 sounds pretty good!)

it cant be that bad, at least its AM... i live in radio hell, where out of the 20ish odd stations down here, 10-15 are in spanish...radio hell is the Rio Grande Valley... where stations that quote " #1 for hip hop r&b n reggaeton", play is kelly clarkson. just to let you know that Clear Channel CAN NOT do hip hop @ all...
