Beaumont/Port Arthur Move-In (Take 2)?

KNGT 99.5 Lake Charles at one time had a permit that would have added the Triangle to its coverage area that was never built.

They've filed an application to do the same last week...upgrading from a class C1 to a C0 and moving from a site ENE of Lake Charles to NW of Sulphur. The application says the current site is going to be demolished at the end of August.

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101387879&formid=301&fac_num=53643

The attachments have the coverage...if granted, it would put a 60 dbU contour over Beaumont and Pt Arthur and a city grade signal over half of Pt Arthur, the east side of Beaumont, and Orange.

They want to go up on KVHP-TV's tower. KVHP 29 Lake Charles was Fox's affiliate in the Beaumont market but used a translator to provide a better signal into Beaumont. Doesn't speak well of 99.5's prospects.

Unless they are going to change their format to something competitive, no one in the Triangle will listen to this train wreck.

I don't think the comparison with Fox 29 is that relevant (i.e., FM vs. analog UHF). I expect that if the application is approved, and it probably will be, KNGT's coverage of the Triangle should be fairly impressive. A Longley-Rice study would seem to support this; Orange and Port Neches-Groves would receive a city-grade signal (70dBu+). Vidor and Port Arthur would fall in the 65-69dBu range and most of Beaumont would lie in the 60-64dBu, placing all of them within the "protected" service area contour.

You're right, stan. It's the content that will make the difference. I remember them sounding really good back at times in the KHLA era but that was quite some time ago.
