I'm recalling that actor Patrick O'Neal was KFOG's advertising spokesperson during the last couple years of the Beautiful Music format. He was a "distinguished" looking older actor, who mostly guest-starred in TV series (Murder She Wrote, etc.) during the 70s and 80s. According to Wikepedia, he was also a restaurateur in New York. He gave off a somewhat British air, though he was actually American.

KFOG bought advertising on the back of the electric MUNI trolleys in San Francisco. For years after KFOG changed to rock music, you'd still see those O'Neal ads on the back of the trolleys.

Lkeller:

Patrick O'Neal was also the advertising spokesperson for WPAT in New York City too. I remember seeing those spots on TV all the time.

"For the best Beautiful relaxing music in New York listen to WPAT 93 AM AND FM"

Hey Guys:

I want to correct a station on the list.

KLGS 95.3 was not a Beautiful Music Station, it was a MOR/Stds format.

I got in touch with a former jock who worked at the station in 1967 and he gave me that info.

Also WDVR Philadelphia, now WBEB, B-101. :)

How ironic, sports talk today is like what Beautiful Music was back then.

A "parking" strategy for stations who felt they had no better alternative. You could always find advertisers who would buy an EZ station, even the 4th EZ station in a 3 station market!!!

Beautiful Music wasn't just for old people. In my 'hippie' days, I had at least two friends who liked to smoke a joint, kick back and tune in a Beautiful Music station, then listen through head phones.

I tried it a couple of times...it was kind of like floating...

As a NY baby boomer, I'd listen to WMCA, WABC and WOR-FM for about 50 weeks a year. When Christmas approached I'd go to easy listening WRFM and WPAT-FM, especially the latter for my annual fix of traditional holiday favorites. At the stroke of midnight on Christmas night, I was back on the top 40 stations! :)

That kind of thing still exists. It's called "Music From the Hearts of Space" and KALW still runs it every Sunday night. Stephen Hill managed to create a whole industry selling "space music".
