89.1 KFAE Richland, WA

This is usually what I have going on the truck radio whilst heading between Arlington and Pendleton. First thing I do after I get up on the plateau is dig out the SCA rig, plug it into the truck radio and set it to 89.1/67! The programming on the Evergreen Radio Reading Service is, I think, far more interesting than what NPR has.

In the 8 April log you mentioned KKAD at 1550 and KVAN at 1560. Well, about ten years ago KKAD itself used to be KVAN! KVAN at that time fell under new owhership, and they switched it from its previous news-traffic format to a short-lived talker known as "Advice Radio" (what the "AD" in "KKAD" stands for.) Predictably, new call letters also ended up being part of the bargain, and the KVAN call lost all sense of localism it once had here.

Although if you are ever in NE Vancouver, you can wander on down to the transmitter site at NE 45th and 162nd, and observe a bit of history written on the sign of the site's front gate: "KVAN-AM 1550/KPAM-AM 860."

F.Y.I., before my editing times out and I forget: the original KVAN, when they were running a country format in the 1960s, was where Willie Nelson got his start.

KVAN 1560 (not 1550) is out of Kennewick, and is Spanish Religious/Music. Before this, it simulcasted smooth jazz from 101.9 KUJJ in Pendelton "Smooth Jazz 101.9".
