Beer and brats anyone?

Interesting topic on the Phoenix board http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=165124.0

A Market/Heritage Morning show guy asked the readers of the board to come to his house on a Saturday and he'd spring for food/beverages for EVERYONE, but with one stipulation. Everyone had to pre-register buy using their REAL NAME. That was the deal. Friends OR foe. His family, including 4 daughters, would foot the bill in an effort to "ditch the mask of anonymity" of user-names on forums like this.

What's funny is the "arc" the thread takes. As you'll read, the first few responses are all kinda cuddly, like "WHAT A GREAT IDEA!) Then the "idealism" turns into "realism" fairly soon. Anyway, thought you might enjoy the tread or to see if this idea could fly here in Seattle.

It is an entertaining thread. However it wouldn't fly here, or in Peoria, or pretty much any other place you'd try it for the exact same reasons it died in Phoenix.

The issue of anonymous-v-real names has been raised on many a board (not just R-I and not just radio) and the outcomes are pretty much the same - the real name idea dies for a number of reasons - and usually they're all the same ones.

It still would be kinda neat to look under "the kilt" so to speak, right? Just thought some would enjoy the thread. By the way, I can guarantee we'll be having beer and brats at our house this weekend. "Same as it ever was".

You don't want to see what's under MY kilt (I don't want to turn this board into another Yahoo! Messenger. Besides the fact it might be bigger than yours, I don't wear those damn things anyway. I'm not Scottish.)

If you want to see the real me.....here I am. Warts and all. Ugly? Yes I am. Non-sophisticated? It's in your mind's eye. But truthful from a street level point of view? You damn right.

I see the world around me these days and it's HARD for me to find anyone that actually admits they listen to local, or Seattle, or Vancouver radio anymore. Some places will keep it on as background music (the local head shop plays KAFE.) The Horseshoe Cafe plays KISM.....but other than that...well, no. Not anymore.

A few years ago (if you can call 2002 a FEW years ago...God how time flies...), I could go into any store in Seattle and hear anything from KZOK to KOMO playing loud and proud. I could be driving on Northbound Aurora and hear anything from CKWX to KUBE blasting out of someone's car radio.

These days (last time I was paying attention, mid-December 2009), I heard KRWM playing their Christmas format in three stores (which might explain their numbers jump) and the last car on Northbound Aurora I heard any radio was a beater car that had KUBE playing in it with the passenger window smashed in and it was covered in clear Visqueen and framed in duct tape.

I looked at it and dude looked at me and shouted "YO! You checkin' out my ride?"

"Yes I am" I replied. "My condolences" But who was I to talk? I'm still driving that '65 Ford F-100 and I actually beat him in 3rd gear, with that truck, with it's original AM radio, playing the ghostly signal of KWLE Anacortes in North Seattle at around 2 PM......at least my truck looked beat, but worked functional. He had a '70s something Monte Carlo that I noticed had a hubcap falling off in my rear view mirror as he tried to gain speed on me.....

Everybody else had an MP3 player or a CD/thumb drive playing in it. I can't help but notice the absence of DJs, jingles/sweepers or commercials between songs.

So the question may be "Is anyone listening to radio?" My answer is "Get out there and judge for yourself. Talk to average people, strangers, people you don't know...Randomly. You might be surprised....."

It can tell you a hell of a lot more than some selected group with a handful of PPMs ever can......

Well, LBB, we play BOTH kinds of music here in Houston. ;D

So true...though it's a bummer how many great stations have come & gone. KULF, The T40 version of 93Q, the T40 version of KILT, KIKK (and later, -FM), even KNUZ. In those days "both" music types was also 'rock' & 'roll' ... as well as the alternative you mention! I also remember the KPFT bombings, etc. Always enjoy coming back to visit! Great market!

If we are talking H-town, you can't leave out the legendary Rock 101 KLOL. One of my highlights before moving up to Seattle was sitting in on the Stevens & Pruitt show. They inspired me to work on a morning show.

This actually made me curious whether there has ever been a local meetup of those who frequent the Sea-Tac board?

Might be interesting to actually share some beers in person with those who actively opine here.

Great job bringing this BACK to Beer and Brat's .. though in a different context! I think a pub-based chat would be a LOT of fun!

Similar question - is there any kind of bar or pub where the "media elite" meet anymore in Seattle? Or, what's left of the newspaper reporters and radio news and talent? I'd suppose the sale staffs wouldn't usually be a part of such a scene, would they?

I know this is not a particularly "warm" city where people are welcome to get together and hang out to talk, but I think a BBQ or a hangout placel are good ideas to provide some civility and comraderie to what's left of an industry that's still worth talking about.

G-locks...Great idea! Should make it happen at The 13 Coins. That's where the movers and shakers meet to do the deed. The Coins next to the Times not that lame imitation near SeaTac. Too bad the Twin Teepees is gone!
