Before you kill The Frog, Lew, how about a profitable idea?

Hardee-Har-Har! :D
Hadn't thought of that!
Jesus is involved in at least one-half of that equation, I am certain!

Thanks for the 'menu tip', but I never eat the 'veal' in a place like this ;D

There aren't a lot of well-heeled broadcasters in the 'Friends of Cthulhu' crowd these days.

One possiblem game changer: A Cumulus cramdown of Mike Huckabee's new 12-3pm talk show. Some Cumulus markets are being told Huckabee MUST be cleared before 7pm. Should this be true for 98.7, they have 2 choices....dump Rush or dump Phil. If they dump Rush (I think part of this is getting Premiere product off their stations), I would assume Pirkle picks him up immediately (as soon as the notice period is through)

Here's another way to go about it: WNOX can open another channel 'En Espanol'. I guess HD is the way you kids do that these days, right?

Johnny swings by Home Depot and picks up a couple of guys who know enough English to do The "Eduardo y Roberto En Espanol" on the subcarrier. This attracts the monied Hispanic broadcasters, who now have a voice on one of the big stations (stick-wise, not ratings-wise.)

This then gives WNOX enough money to get The Rush Limbaugh Show. One would figure that on the Hispanic channel, he would REALLY become 'El Rushbo.'

The bumper music would be of the cheesy mariachi band style. Instead of "It's the Ed & Bob Show!" they could drag it out like..."Eduarrrrrrrrdoooo eeee Robertoooooo!"

Does WJXB's crossover country sound a little rowdier these days?

stupidest move ever by cumulas to kill sound off on WIVK on Sunday Mornings. I think this is the end of the frog and full service radio as we know it.

Clear Channel would have probably done it too if they owned it. All the stations they have here in Columbus run a half hour community forum and that's it.

Why would that be a stupid move? WIVK runs a talk show and sends the country audience across town. Cumulus has a whole station (well at least half of one) to run talk shows.

It's a stupid move because many of WIVK's loyal listeners are listening to it due to it's Full Service and News Department. The music on WIVK is not so special to listeners now. Personality and Full Service is why WIVK is still on top in the market in the Arbitrons. Lose that full service and personalities, listeners will jump ship.

Heritage country stations have loyal audiences because of country music, and yes personalities they like, but not news departments and certainly not Sunday morning talk shows. There's a reason the talk show was on at a time when there are very few people listening to the radio, as opposed to 3pm on a weekday afternoon.

For the present time, The Frog remains more than the sum of its parts. One poster here probably listened to Soundoff most of his or her life and apparently will miss it. I can still get my George Jones somewhere else, but I need to tune around to find a fresh traffic report when I have to go to K-Town. Practically every station in town does at least one element of what WIVK does, and many do that one thing well enough to get by.

The Frog's present owner doesn't care, and doesn't want to break corporate formation to keep it what it is. And nobody is stepping up. I'll be pushing up daisies soon enough anyway. At least James A, Claude, Lester, and Old Man Schultz will be waiting on the other side. Maybe The Frog will be waiting there, too.

The point is many Knoxville market listeners listen to WIVK for their traffic reports and their news. This is the one station you can depend on for the above.

Good point. While flipping the dial during last night's storms, the only weather coverage I heard was on WIVK and B-97.5 (with a channel 10 simulcast). Although I should also mention the impressive coverage provided by 105.7 The Hog from Crossville. I didn't really expect it from them but they surprised me.

The Hog sounds good. Wonder what it'd do with 100kw behind it.

What would the Hog do with 100kw? Give the Knoxville Stations some serious competition is what. programming is not bad and anytime there is severe weather, they and Steve Norris are on top of it. No simulcasting TV stations either. radio the way it needs to be.

The Hog is a great sounding station, and to answer the The Tenn. Cowboys question, if they had a 100,000 watts behind them, strong jocks, great promotions, they would put a lot of stations in East Tenn. to shame!!!

There are probably plenty of more steps than this, but here's what appears to be a good combination for a successful dominant station:

>Some kind of broad-appeal music. And be proud of it. Do more than use it to fill the spaces between spots. Bring in artists to interview. Be involved in the industry. Don't just wait for the record companies feed you press information.

>Talent. Entertainers with enthusiasm. Let them take full ownership of their shows. Keep them polished and consistent.

>News, weather, sports, and don't be afraid to have someone on the streets looking to scoop the paper. Be embarrassed if you have to use the paper to fill out any of your newscasts. It should be old news by the time it lands on your listener's driveway.

>When there's something going on, don't be the station just playing music. Don't let your audience think that they have to go somewhere else to find what they need.

>And a good, strong signal. George Mooney laid some smackdown with 1kw WKGN about 40 years go. Since then it's all been a combination of brains, testicluar fortitude, money and wattage.

Maybe nobody has the money to do this kind of thing any more. Does anybody remember the days when Bobby Denton would walk into a room like he owned it? Would most of us even know if the GM of a large station or group was in the same room with us today? Maybe they have the brains, but they don't seem to have the testosterone. My apologies to any of the female persuasion on this board. The only woman GM I remember in this market displayed more testosterone than her competitors, and she was pushed out the door. I think she's content to play agency media queen these days.

Totaly true Tenn. Cowboy!! This is how I use to program radio before corperate radio came along with all this voice tracking and one GM show for several stations in many different markets. Speaking of WKGN 1340. I remember when it was Urban back in the early 90's and the station made it to 6th place overall among the 100,000 watt fm's in the market, simply because the station implemented the same tactics it spoke of. Even though Knoxville is not an Urban market, the station did well numbers wise simply because it was live and in the community.
