Beg-a-thon Alert

If the phones go unanswered this Wed & Thu at the Buckeye Media Hut, that's because Nurse Jeff & I have left town. Why? Why, it's time for yet another KTAR/KMVP beg-a-thon...two days of non-stop solicitation for the sake of the children. Worthy cause no doubt, but for cryin' out loud even Jerry Lewis knew when to hang it up. The saving grace may be TMISU give Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty a bye on this one. You know, there's much to be said for a silent auction!

I work for a station that does an annual radiothon for the Children's Miracle Network folks and we raise a lot of money for them. The CMN people have gotten pretty good at radio and balancing the ask with being a radio station, and they advise stations how to do it without making people tune out. You might be surprised if you stick around for some of it. The shows in my career I've been most proud of doing were radiothon shows.

What surprises me, particularly when these always seem to happen during monsoon season, is 92.3 goes all-or-nothing and completely shuts out Detour Dan with traffic alerts that could assist listeners who are listening in their cars. Nope, don't need to know about the golf-ball hail pelting everyone or the block of dust that just hit the I-17 stack, but hey, remember the kids-! To avoid repeats of Dumb and Dumber scolding listeners complaining about no traffic updates -- the ONLY reason anyone listens to them anymore -- perhaps 92.3 could start planning these beg-a-thons during the SPRING or SUMMER when monsoon weather's a non-issue. But deliberately shutting out traffic alerts when your listeners might find them helpful? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

That's surprising. We keep our benchmarks in place, although sometimes we hit them late during radiothon. But we can't drop news or traffic because they're sponsored and rule #1 is we don't miss spots. (rule #2? See rule #1.)
