Beginning To Be A Smooth Jazz Christmas

As I browse through the stations websites, I noticed a couple of stations in our format already talking about switching to an all Christmas format very soon or the day after Thanksgiving.

KIFM in San Diego already has a HD station already devoted for Christmas on their home page. http://www.kifm.com/

KYSJ in Coos Bay will flip to a all Christmas format, the day after Thanksgiving. http://www.lighthouseradio.com/kysj/

For me, I like Christmas music to start after Thanksgiving, but not non stop Christmas music. Slowly build the music toward the holiday while playing the music that you are suppose to be playing. ;D

I'm with Jazz Kat..I think Christmas music should start after Thanksgiving. I worked for 2 A/C stations that played all Christmas. One was voicetracked so I didn't have to listen to the songs, the other we all just turned the speakers down. I also worked for an 80s station that played no Christmas music and listeners would call us up and thank us for giving them something to listen to that wasn't all "Santa Claus is Coming To Town"

Our show is on a Clear Channel A/C that goes Holiday the weekend before Thanksgiving so I am digging through the libraries and my collection to put together a mix of really strong seasonal favorites, interesting arrangements and some seasonal goodies that haven't been flogged to death (like Celestial Navigations, Wind Machine and Narada) Marc Antione has a version of Pachibels Canon that fits too.

I don't mind so much wall-to-wall Christmas jazz on these stations, but what scares me is what usually happens after these Christmas stunts. I'm afraid we might lose some of these to another format.

I know what you mean. I hope a lot, if not all the stations stay. I can't see to lose a station like KIFM, KWJZ, KYSJ, WSJW and a few others. Maybe we can make it through the holiday okay. There's so much good music out there, it's just need to be played.

Off note - I got Nikki Yanofsky's, Nikki today at Best Buy. Heard one of the songs, Never Make It On Time on KYSJ and finally found out who sung and who she was. IMO, this is the type of music I wouldn't mind hearing on Smooth Jazz stations today instead of these wore out ones we can't seem to get enough of. ::)

My favorite Xmas smooth jazz last year was Bernie Kenerson's "Merry EWI Christmas." I'm hoping to hear a little of that again this year. I see a couple of new xmas jazz releases out this month. Any of those any good?

Trying to schedule holiday music it strikes that so much is really soft, and everyone records the same songs. Trying to keep even 1 1/2 hours between specific titles is really tough.

Nikki reminds me of Kelly Sweet and that girl that did the country album then did the 'jazz" album that Botti played on. Young, pretty, good voice but not unique or original and not much of an interpreter. Kinda brings out my inner "Idol" judge as in "that was just OK to me" It seems like the main attribute that is promoted with female vocalists in this format is that they are not yet 20. But the listeners are over 30. What's up with that. I'd rather hear, maturity, interpretative skills and a voice that sounds more interesting and less "pagent-y'. Like Dana Glover on the new Koz CD, for instance.

Yeah, can't figure that out. I see a lot of vocal jazz (smooth and mainstream), especially from 20-something vocalists, that is very blah. If you're going to do it just like Billie Holiday or Sade, why bother?

To me a lot of them sound like they are singing in pagents. Pleasant voices but no nuance and they take no risks to stand out from the rest of the pretty singers.
