Belated 30th Anniversary

On 5/5/1982, the music stopped on Birmingham's WERC-960, switching from AC to News-Talk. WERC had been a Top 40 powerhouse in the Magic City from the time it took on WSGN in 1972, and the two stations had quite the dogfight for supremacy throughout the mid '70's. The beginning of the end for WERC started in '77, when WERC-FM upgraded its facilities, changed the call letters to WKXX and became what was at first Top 40/AOR hybrid, then later Top 40 Kicks 106. By '80, WERC-AM moved from Top 40 to AC, and gave Eli Gold his Birmingham start as a sports talk host during afternoon drive time.
