Belkin TuneCast HD FM Transmitter released

nd2023

Banned
The ever-popular Part 15 FM transmitter is now HD capable. Yup, now even a little part 15 transmitter can splatter the adjacents with IBUZ. Now you can hear your iPod in your car in crystal clear HD. It should be flying off the shelves!

Hilarious. You can barely buy an HD radio any more these days, but you can buy a transmitter.
Does iBiquity demand a license? ;) :D

What kina coax-n-cnnecters ya gotta connect the RF out to the radio with?

F connector to BNC to N to clipleads to a balun to 300-ohm flatlead. You know: typical iBiquity engineering. :D

Sounds like a joke to me. Most newer cars and car stereos (the only place you would find HD in the first place) come with a line input jack already. FM transmitters are for older car radios and people like me who are too cheap to upgrade their radio.

And not even a well-executed All Fools' Day joke, either. Nick could have at least included a Tiny URL to a Rick Astley video file on You Tube and labelled it as a news report or something, you know, try to make it look slightly more convincing.......

FAIL

Yes, it was a joke. Can't believe some of you fell for it. I guess something like this isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially if HD took off and had a sizable market share, since a Part 15 FM transmitter would sound great on a car radio in full 96k HD with no interference.

I didn't even notice the thread until the 2nd, but I knew it had to be an April Fool's prank. Think about it - the transmitter would be the size of a pack of gum, the rest of the electronics would be the size of a laptop!

I actually have a setup matching those specs. The transmitter is the size of a pack of gum (it's an older analogue Tunecast, with push-button tuner, that I soldered a more adequate/illegal aerial into) and the rest of the electronics are the size of a laptop.....wait a minute, that's because it *is* a laptop!

Funny how that works sometimes......

Im actually working on a prototype. Ive taken 3 FM transmitters. Two are set to the adjacent frequencies of the main transmitter and these two transmit the HD noise. The main transmitter takes the audio input via a 3.5mm jack and converts it to a low quality digital format with artifacts before converting it back to analog to send to the transmitter.

The nice part about this setup is that you can enjoy HD radio on an analog only radio.

If you get this to work, you could put it in a radio museum so that one day in the future people could tune an actual radio
and see what FM radio was really like in 2011!

Are you feeding generic hiss into the adjacents, or have you really matched the buzz-saw pitch? :D

I'm at the NAB show this week and happened to walk by the Nautel booth. Their new slogan is "Making HD Radio work". It may be just me but the slogan has a kind of 'come hell or high water we're gonna make this turkey work' feel to it. They even list in bold print on a banner -10 power increase and asymmetrical side bands. Ibiquity was a no-show but Bext was there showing off FMXtra encoders and radios.

It would be if it were true, but in fact they had a very large booth near one of the main Central Hall entrances.

Yeah, I thought it pretty odd that the only company whose DAB tech is actually in wide use in the US wouldn't have a booth there.....
