Beloit college files to cancel 90.3 WBCR

The license was officially canceled by the commission last week, but WBCR is still on the air this morning. Oops. Somebody should probably go turn off the transmitter.

Are you sure it wasn’t somebody near the college who was running a pirate radio station with the content from the former station. I ask because I came across a pirate fm translator that was rebroadcasting WTMJ on 92.5 FM In Beloit.

By the way if one was to run a pirate station it would be quite clever to take the frequency of a recently cancelled station.

I do not encourage pirate radio.

This station's been in operation since 1907:
They may have been referring to radio activity, likely through experimental AM. Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, had an active radio club as early as 1896; eventually it yielded an early AM station that became WCSO, one of the predecessors to WGAR radio in Cleveland. Today they have WUSO (albeit now operated by a third party) which claims some of that lineage.

Methinks that this college had an unlicensed carrier current station that operated for decades until the FM was licensed and activated, and the histories of both were ultimately combined and confused.
