The guys at the ticket when they started were NOT the best. They went through the growing pains and they are the best. The Fan wants to be on top without the growing process. Well it is never going to work with all part time board ops, hosts who are not getting paid what they were promised three months ago and hosts who do not do research.
Which is why I'm not sure that Jerry's going to let the Cowboys go on that station "only".
The real problem that the Fan faces is that they've got 2 well entrenched rivals who own the high ground of ratings and revenue. And they can setthe standard of what is expected AND react to anything the Fan does and constantly marginalize them.
Example 1 Take the Super Bowl. The Fan sent Ben and Skin. The Ticket sent ALL of their weekday hosts. Even if KTCK goes off-track and does guy talk while there, they're still talking about the SB, talking to people in the media center about the SB, etc etc. While Kevin and Greg Hill are stuck trying to come up with subjects to talk about.
Example 2. Ability to get big names guests. Even if Newey and Salisbury dig through their rolodexes and get some big named frineds on, will they ever be able to beat ESPN's roster of guests? They always seem to have whatever big name is in teh news on...I guess it's that 'worldwide leader in sports' thing they've got going for them.
Example 3 The Ticket can does post games shows for EVERY sport in town. If you're a hardcore sports fan and leave the game and want to hear some analysis and calls about it, you know you can get that on 1310AM (well, at least until you get north of 635 and it fades out

) Can (or will) the Fan try to match them, or will they just cede that listening to KTCK?
To get to your point, the Ticket succeeded way back when because they didn't have direct competition. They were the only 'all sports' radio station around. The Fan doesn't have that luxury. Every minor pain they have, KTCK and ESPN will be looking to exploit.
