Ben-FM Breaks It Up

Hmm, the morning show they have now is good, and no jocks all day works fine (not that Joey, before she left for maternity wasn't good, but it's not like they need personalities). It seems like a strange move for no real benefit.

I hope to high heaven that you are not talent. Radio needs personalities.

Um, no, it doesn't. Some formats need...or are much better with...personalities, but across the board? No. Ben FM, sans personalities, has been the only thing to garner any traction for Greater Media on that frequency post WFLN. Moreso than the trio that preceded it, with personalities all day.

I will allow you the final word on this, but I respectfully disagree. Maybe they just did not have the right personalities.

I have to disagree with imhomerjay. Radio needs personality. Yes, BEN-FM has been the only thing on 95.7 that had any success since WFLN, but do you really think it was because of the lack of personality? No. It was because of the music. It's a unique format, and they were doing it right. The ONLY thing it was missing was personality, and now they have it.

I agree with both schools of thought.

Some stations need personality; others don't. For some stations, it helps; for others, it doesn't. For yet others, it actually hurts. BEN-FM had managed to carve out a personality without jocks during the day. The station's snarky attitude and "J. Peterman" drop-ins have actually lent the station a fine personality. They've gotten this far and now jocks just seem unnecessary--and like an interruption. Will it hurt? Probably not. But will it help? Of course not.

"Active" formats like CHR, Urban, Rock... These stations absolutely need jocks (and preferably live ones). Background formats like AC, Classic Hits, Variety Hits seem to be able to carve out a fine little audience and "station personality" with the jukebox approach. Kinda sucks but what are ya gonna do?

That's a better way to summarize the thought. Stations do well to have a personality, but not necessarily personalities. Does Ben gain anything by taking three people who interacted with each other fairly well (though two did it well before Marilyn came on board, to be fair) for 3 hours and spreading it out to single personalities over the full day? We'll find out in the long run.

What I think gets lost is that there are plenty of people who don't like the chatter. Quick little drop-ins like the O'Hurley bits work fine. It isn't the end of civilization that some stations can do well without DJs all the time. I understand it is frustrating for people to see jobs go away, but radio is hardly unique among businesses. The bottom line does need to be a consideration.

I agree with the above post. In the end, when looking at the structure of the "Jack-FM" format on paper, shouldn't the only personality that really matters be John O'Hurley?
