Ben Fong-Torres

If you love disc jockeys and I know a lot of you do (why didn't they call this, "Disc Jockey Corner"? You must have a copy of "The Hits Just Keep On Comin'" a book written by Ben Fong Torres in 1998 that was publised in 2001 when some of the great disc jockeys were alive. The Real Don Steele had just passed away but the rest are there, Doctor Don Rose, Gary Mack and many more. My hero Bill Wade's not there but that's o.k. there are enough DJs to make this a wonderful read. And is Ben Fong-Torres a terrific writer! His earlier experiences mirror mine; homemade radio station, red rocket crystal radio, spending time in the southwest (He in Amarillo, me growing up in Roswell, New Mexico. ...). It's a wonderful experience (the book) and reading about, "top 40 radio, and the guys who drove it ". -John-

John:
You're right...it's a marvelous book. I happened to be in San Francisco on business 9 years ago, had the honor of having lunch with Bobby Ocean, and he mentioned that Ben was having a reading and book signing at the San Francisco main library that very night.
I arranged for a later flight back to Phoenix, parked next to and walked in with Dave Sholin, and met Dr. Don Rose and Ben...all three signed my copy. Needless to say, it's a treasure.

I'm jealous Michael - I heard about that library signing after the fact. I also missed an appearance at a bookstore Ben did some years ago with Bobby Ocean. It is a great book, and Ben seems like a very nice guy. I've never met him in person, but have emailed him a few times about items in Radio Waves. He always replies thoughtfully, and at some length. In the 70s, I was an avid reader of Rolling Stone, and remember what an excellent journalist he was. He stood out among some other great writers including Cameron Crow, Joe Ezterhas, and Hunter Thompson.

I'll take it a step further -- once you're done reading "The Hits Just Keep Coming," pick up BF-T's "Becoming Almost Famous," a collection of his best rock interviews.

Ben might be at the September Broadcast Legends lunch -- if you bring your copy of either book, I'm certain he'd autograph it ... then you can take it around the room and have some of the others sign it, too.

(I know, no Dr. Don, no Russ The Moose, no Big Daddy Tom Donahue...)
