My college station (KCOU, Columbia, MO) subscribed to a tape service called the Progressive Radio Network, which distributed a feature from Ben Manilla called “The News Blimp”, generally a longish story accompanied by music cuts that reflected the theme of the feature. I think PRN went mostly to college stations, but I know that WWCT in Peoria, which often could be received at my east-central Missouri home of the time, also carried “The News Blimp”.

(extra spaces were caused by a problem with the Bluetooth keyboard that I’m using with my iPad; please ignore - a battery change seems to have fixed it}

I notice I made an error when I said Manilla started Radio Today. That company was started by Dan Formento, and Ben was a producer at the company in the 80s before moving to California.

I was lucky enough to live and work in the Hempstead NY area where WLIR-FM was located (not to be confused with Garden City COL).
Ben hosted "The Midnight Snack" along with "Manilla Time" (q: Thriller by Michael Jackson) as well as the morning show and was part of "The Bozo Patrol" (as dubbed by John DeBella q: Love is like a Rock by Donnie Iris) with Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult.

Several years ago he revived The News Blimp's here: News Blimps

It's nostalgia for some of us but really worth a listen as there were many talented people who contributed.

Enjoy!
