Benny Springer is back in East Texas

I heard from a friend that Benny Springer is back in East Texas. I heard he is over at the Reynolds group. I would assume ass General Manager.... Congrats to Benny he is a great guy!

Good for Benny, and good for the Reynolds group. I would assume that means the end of the talk experiment on 99.3, at least. That's too good of a signal to be drawing ratings that bad.

Not sure I would agree with that. Probably the worst coverage of any FM in the market. It's true their ratings should be higher, but any format is going to have a tough time of it on that signal as it's impossible to cover the market like most of the other FM's.

It's a very desirable signal if you sell it the right way. Which might be an option for them, now that I think about it. And in any case, everything I heard about the ratings were beyond atrocious. They're about to be out of election and football season, so there's no reason to stay with news and sports for the dead season.

I'm dating myself here....but I think a revival of "Y99" from the 80s would be great! Especially since it's on the original 99.3 frequency...something to think about. ;)

The 99.3 signal is one of the better signals in the market! The only ones that are better are KYKX, KOOI, KNUE, KTYL, and that is it! The rest either only cover Tyler or Longview or Jacksonville.

The station's signal puts in a grade A into Longview and Tyler, but only a grade B into Jacksonville. 99.3 is a Class C2 at 34KW from the top of Gladewater.

This station has the potential to be a real contender.

If they should decide to do Classic Hits the 2 guys that could do mornings and afternoons are already on the pay roll! Dave Mooreland would be perfect for mornings on the station and Chuck McKinley would keep the station rocking in the afternoons. These guys are seasoned pros and fantastic DJ's!

Agreed on both daypart suggestions. Worked with Chuck and he is indeed a great air talent.

Dave was amazing on KOOI, and Chuck helped make The Ranch the best sounding station in East Texas!

Agreed on both here, too, kogo.

Oh, agreed. Two very classy, very knowledgeable, very well-experienced guys. You flip that station to one of a couple of musical formats the market needs, turn it over to Chuck and Dave, and you could start the turnaround in a month or less. Anything to draw some kind of ratings.

Had the pleasure of working for Benny a few years back at KYKX...the staff absolutely loved him. Benny will always be there for you personally and professionally as long as you're honest with him. He will "Take care of Business"...simply put...if you think you can blow Benny off because you're "Super Jock" and you do what you want when you want...he has no problem "Taking out the Trash" if need be.

I'd love it. that would be a good idea for a classic hits station.

But I dont think many Longview would remember Y99, since in the eighties they were only 3K off the KDOK tower and barely got out of Tyler. I remember visiting Y99 in 1989 and they were still playing 45's!

(I'm getting nostalgic feeling remembering how isolated the Tyler and Longview markets were in the 80's before the power upgrades or move-in's)

What was KEYP's original format? I think that they did Easy Listening for a while after KNUE switched to country.

I suspect as many people in Longview remember Y99 as remember 92.1's brief attempt at an AOR format in 86-87. I think that KROZ Z92.1 as an album rock station lasted less than a year. Back in those days, there were only about 4 signals that covered both cities, 93.1, 101.5, 105.7 and 106.5.

You think correctly, sir.

Also, their original calls were KFML.
