Bermuda with US network TV

I see that ZBM/9 airs Sesame Street at Noon ADT, and ZFB/7 airs the same show at 5PM ADT. Guess that's because of no PBS station on the island?

VSB-11 will have Jeff Probst starting tomorrow, and also airs Steve Harvey.

For some reason, I see TPIR and Y&R in the late afternoon/early evening on ZBM/9. Wonder why?

You at least partially answered your question when you said
that ZBM airs "Sesame Street" at noon ADT (11 AM EDT, when
"Price" airs); they probably hold "Price" and "Y&R" to late afternoon
as the best possible lead-in to their local news, much as some CBS
stations on the mainland use "Y&R" for that reason (my local CBS
affiliate, WRAL, is one of them).

Canada's CTV had one US affiliate in the late 60's in Jamestown, NY

Very interesting. I had to look this up as I did not know of any TV station in Jamestown.

This was WNYP-TV 26. Apparently it was only on the air for two years. It was indeed
a CTV affiliate, at least until legal actions by the Big 3 networks forced them to drop it.
The station went dark soon afterwards.

It appears Bermuda was assigned a broad alphabet of call signs? Why would such a small island need Vxx & Zxxx call signs?

I hadn't seen that table in a long time. I thought all call letters were grouped for territories, like the Netherlands colonies are listed in that chart. Guess not.

I also didn't realize Canada had some "X" calls like Mexico... even though I had wondered what country had the "X" calls that weren't allocated to Mexico. Has Canada ever used "X" call letters?

Are there any countries that don't have any call letters assigned to TV or radio stations? Afghanistan?

I know call signs in Australia actually start off with a number. The number indicates the state or
territory in which the station is based. 2WS for example is in Sydney, with the "2" indicating
New South Wales. 7HO is in Hobart, Tasmania, indicated by the "7", etc.

Officially, Australian broadcasters start with VL, but the prefix isn't used on-air.

New Zealand was similar until 1990, but with the ZL prefix, shared with hams. The first letter after the number indicated the service (A-W were ham calls, X for private commercial stations, Y & Z for Radio New Zealand). AFAIK, broadcasters there haven't had official call letters since 1990. I'm guessing that the entire ZL prefix is now assigned only to hams.

I believe CB calls start (or did start) with XM, but no broadcasters in Canada ever used X. There are a few in Newfoundland/Labrador that start with VO, since that prefix was assigned to them prior to joining Canada in 1949.

Speaking of Bermuda News, I'm surprise their weather forecast uses Fahrenheit instead of Celsius. I thought Bermuda (a UK territory) will use the metric system instead of the old English system. Same thing for Bahamas.

Very strange to see the mix of TV choices there. Lots of different places involved. The Bahamas (at least Nassau and Freeport) has an even more diverse lineup. It is like America. They have high speed internet and phone service and digital cable.

They even get the Big Ten Network in HD along with every pro sports package but the NHL.

They get Miami stations on basic, plus KTLA, WGN, WWOR, WPIX and WNET on the most basic package. Seattle's big four are on all but the most basic package.

CBC is also there, along with several other popular Canadian channels on the higher-end packages.

Strange to see how TV has developed there, since the country didn't even have TV until 1977. They only got cable in 1995.

This is a little old (2005), but still this is an interesting history of cable TV there.

Bermuda reminds me a lot like Canada...at least it did, when I was there.

Looking at their cable as well, one would think he were in Toronto. :)

Just my opinion.

Not too many palm trees in Ontario ;D

I doubt the networks try to milk every last cent out of these island cable cos for carriage. That would be an easy explanation for the superior lineups offered.
I wonder what ther charge per month for service?

The HD channels are even weirder: KRMA Denver for PBS, WUHF Rochester for Fox (probably both sourced from Canadian satellite), but apparently no NBC/CBS/ABC HD. And they get TSN from Canada in HD, too!

I have not seen current cable listings as yet, but if NBC/CBS/ABC *were* available (HD or not) from cable/sat in Bermuda, it would immediately push ZFB/ZBM/VSB into "indie" mode....they couldn't compete, otherwise.

Sorta like the "must carry" in the US.
