A few years back, Bernard Spigner and former Gov. Jim Florio were doing their usual Friday afternoon radio show on WCTC in New Brunswick when a caller demanded to know Florio's favorite music group.
"Queen," Florio responded, choosing the lush, 1970s British rock sensation.
"Well, governor, I certainly never knew THAT," Spigner deadpanned.
"And then he went off on a tear of obscure bands from the 1950s and 1960s that only he could have possibly known," Florio recalled yesterday. "That was Bernard. He could talk about so many different things."
Spigner died Sunday after collapsing in the Metuchen home that his father, a union carpenter, built and where Spigner grew up. He was 51 and had just started chemotherapy treatments for cancer.
