Bernie is Bye Bye!

I have it on good authority that Bernie Kimble is no longer with WNWV in Cleveland. After many, many years at the Wave, the process to find his replacement is on. No format change coming. Could be interesting!

wow, that's big news. i'd be curious whose decision the move was. i sure hope this doesn't mean changes with their programming musically as you could always tell bernie had his imprint on the mix, but i fear it probably will.

I fear the same. I posted long ago that I thought (hoped) WNVW would be one of the untouchables. But the departure of a PD is usually followed an announcement that the station is going BA Network. I also wrote some time ago about how desperate they are in getting affiliates to offset the rash of big-market losses. The BA method of operation after a successful pitch is to get the GM to disarm the station of a PD, jettison the local staff, strap on the network, then announce a new PD. Remember, the format is going Smooth AC and I think this station has already taken away "jazz" from its moniker. Arbitron has blessed the use of the term "Smooth AC" and will recognize it as a format. So the groundwork is laid for BA to be at the helm of this new format, get new stations and be back on the rise with its "Smooth Network." The fate of the Smooth Jazz format as we knew it is now sealed. If you want to see these BA guys get their just due, you should be thinking of a "soft Urban AC" hybrid now so they won't get to enjoy format exclusivity. Their new approach could very well work. There are Urban answers to CHR and AC, so it's long overdue for an answer to "Soft AC" with "Soft Urban AC" or "Smooth Urban AC." You can create other thorns in the side by creating well thought out specialty contemporary jazz shows for Soft AC, ACs and Urban AC stations.

I won't lose any sleep over Kimble's departure and the fate of WNWV - let's move on with the demise of smooth jazz radio as we know it and on to something much better. Bernie Kimble was a jerk anyway.
