Bert Show to Add DC

The now-syndicated Bert Show is expected to enter its biggest market yet, Washington DC, at Cumulus-owned Mix 107.3. It will replace the legendary Jack Diamond, who held down mornings for 24 years.

It makes me think about when Star 94 hired Jimmy Alexander, and Bert felt Jimmy, as a friend of his, should not have accepted the job opposite him. It seems ironic that Bert will be replacing the man who gave him his first job--morning show producer in San Diego--and then hired Bert twice as his co-host in DC.

My sources at Cumulus tell me that, indeed, Bert will be adding Mix in Washington. I'm also told that (at least for now) Bert will be staying in Atlanta. Personally, I believe a major market station like Mix 107.3 should have its own local morning show.

This is just another way of Cumulus saving money - and IMO it also verifies that Cumulus is, to some degree, in the process of homogenizing many of its CHRs and its Hot ACs into one format

The bad news for Cumulus in DC is they only own two FMs there, and one is wasted with a rebroadcast of an AM conservative talker. So it's a really weak market for them, even though 107 is a huge station.

Bert has some heritage in DC (for those old enough to remember). He left well over ten years ago.

You're right about that! The FM simulcast of WMAL has been a major failure (ratings have actually gone down.) I like Bert, he's a nice guy, but I don't see how a major market Washington station is going to do well airing a syndicated show from a market lower than their own. It'd be like B98.5 airing Bob and Sheri.

PS- Cumulus finally has some validity to airing a Cumulus show in the "Capitol City." :)
