I feel a rebirth in morning radio on Long Island. I actually feel entertained and informed for the first time in years.
Here are my top 8 morning shows and why....
1) Opie and Anthony KRock - They always put an interesting (but slightly immature) twist on everything. I always feel like they have a brilliant way of convincing you what they think is right by being real and hitting hard. Anthony is the most talented personality on the airwaves quick witted and great character voices...Opie is average at best and nothing without Anthony but a great field general. I can do without that Norton guy
2) Chaz and AJ WPLR CT. - Not a local show but still on our local airwaves. Chaz is a great lead voice and the best sound effects guy around. AJ is funny 50% of the time and more of a yes man but still mildly entertaining. The rest of the show sucks but the overall listener friendly participation and sense of community makes a huge difference in the sound of the show. Technically the best show hands down.
3) Double D and Glenn WRCN - Thank God they moved Jen off the show and teamed Double D back up with Glenn. That show is fast moving and the most informative. Double D and Glenn have a great chemistry and at times make me laugh my butt off. Unfortunately they don't talk as much as I would like and I feel like traffic reports are every 5 minutes. Overall the most well rounded show with a good sense of community.
4) Roger and JP WBAB - Roger is a pro's pro with a great voice. He needs a stronger partner. JP has strong opinions but unfortunately not well thought out and he tries to be edgie and it shows. He's more of a dope with a bad voice than anything else. Another technically sound show but not worthy of it's call letters.
5) WALK Breakfast Club - Mark and Cindy are way too fluffy for me, but if I'm desperate I'll take them over listening to AM news. They do have some good info and nobody does school closings better
6) Dana and Randy WBLI - By far the worst show but better then nothing I guess. Dana has nothing to offer and Randy sounds like he should be Mr slave from South Park. All he ever seems to say is ooooh and aaaaaah. The two of them shouldn't be on such a popular station, Im thinking they are not even good enough for WUSB. The same 10 songs WBLI plays all day saves them in the ratings unfortunately. The PD most love train wreck radio.
7) The Wiseman and Frank B103 - A goofball and heritage newsguy mixed with oldies. They stink, I feel like all they do is tell you how great their advertisers are and talk about local towns that might be listening to them. If you're 70 years old and dont want to hear solid personalities thats the show to keep on your preset when you wake up for the early bird special and pick out your best pair of depends.
8) Phathead Island 943 - "The most music morning show" need I say more? I actually feel bad for him sometimes because it sounds like he wants to do something with his show but never gets to it as I continue to listen. He's funny sometimes but talking to that candy chick has to stop. Whatever happened to that Lieana girl he had for a while? It actually was starting to get interesting. He needs a solid partner and he'll move up on my "opinion" list.

Overall....I feel a revival in morning radio on Long Island and I couldnt be happier as a listener that thinks sattelite radio is for fags 8)
Just my opinion as a huge fan of morning shows

Just some interesting notes on your post...

1. I think its funny how some of your top choice shows you totally ragged on. This isn't a criticism, just an observation.

2. Chaz and AJ used to be on WRCN back in the 90's.

3. No mention of the K-Joy morning show. Are you familiar with their show, and if so what do you think?

My thoughts:
There are a few good shows out there that are tough or impossible to catch for various reasons.

For me, I liked O&A better in the afternoon. Not because of them, really because of me. In the morning, I'm really just interested in music and straightforward information. It takes me a long time to get in gear, so I can't deal with the comedy in the morning. I'm in a much better mood on my way home from work, and thats when I want to hear good funny radio.

Some good shows... I used to like Brian Cosgrove's morning program on WEHM. Brian was informative and pleasant in the morning. There was just the right mix of music and talk elements. Unfortunately you can't hear this show anymore because Brian Cosgrove is no longer with that station.

Another show that is decent is the morning show on WNYG 1440. Joe Salzone does a pretty good newscast. Once you get past all the praise the lord stuff, its actually pretty well put together for what they have to work with.

I also used to like The Family Breakfast Show on WICC 600. John LaBarca was like the radio host equivalent of a teddy bear. By listening to his show, you really feel like you know the man on a personal level, like he is an old friend. They did a great job of covering local topics. Unfortunately all good things come to an end. After 18 years, WICC fired their #1 rated morning host just last week. Hopefully hell be back on the local airwaves soon. Maybe even return to Long Island. That would be cool.

Lastly I also liked Kurtis and Kuby. Honestly, I never gave this show a chance because it was on WABC, but I decided to find out what I would be missing once Imus took over. I found their show to be quite interesting actually. I think its tragic that such a decent show got displaced.

Thats about all I can really comment on. I'm glad to hear someone is actually enjoying local radio. Usually people just come on these boards and complain. We appreciate your insight. Maybre some others coul join us in evaluating some of the local fare.

haha yeah i guess i did kinda rag on some shows but it was all with love, i tend to poke some fun at things i can enjoy paying attention too. my main point was i'm glad there are some things going on in the morning that are actually worth forming an opinion on. it's just funny how different all the morning shows are and thats refreshing. i felt like it was dead for a while. the last time i felt like i had talented options was about 7 years ago when i could choose between stern, roger and jp, steve and marie, chambers and tagert, chaz and aj and imus.

to answer your question....i actually havent listened to the k-joy morning show. i'll definately check them out.

Thanks, Ted. That literally made my year.
