Best and not-so-good of 2011

It is getting to be that time - the best and worst of 2011 when it comes to movies, books and best of all, music.

My best pop songs of CHR:

Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People: Yes, it was overplayed. But tell me that that whistle-chorus doesn't get you!?! This is one of those songs we will be hearing thirty years from now on AC and Oldies stations.

Please Don't Go - Mike Posner: This hit was released in late 2010 but still charted in 2011. Radio pretty much ignored it which is a shame. It is understated song that was much deeper than "Cooler Than Me."

E.T. - Katy Perry featuring Kanye West: Hard to get this song outta your brain. I wonder about the longevity about this song but it still was a great spring 2011 ditty.

Ear-achingly bad of the year:

Lighters - Bad Meets Evil: This song is evil in that it unnecessarily accosts our ears. What a jumbled heap o' mess. Eminem with Bruno Mars... wtf? When Bruno Mars starts wailing "A sky full of lighters" in his signature whining voice, I wanna poke my eardrums. There is no way to emphasize how bad this song is. Plus, how do today's kids know about the meaning of lighters???

Best Thing I Never Had - Beyonce: As one person on here put it, I hope this is her "jump the shark" moment. How many songs can we take about trifflin' men who are no good to Mrs. B? Her schtick is getting old. When she states that it "sucks to be you," it makes me cringe. There are so many things wrong with this song it would take a thesis to go into them.

Anyone who reads my posts on this board knows well that I am not a fan of "modern" pop music and this song is an excellent example of why I feel as I do.

There is absolutely nothing in this song that smacks of even a modicum of talent. Nothing! It isn't even an adequate dance tune. It is, however, pretty typical of popular music today and deserves to be roundly ignored by anyone who believes music is more than a boring and repetitive drum beat.

Not only will this song never be heard again after it's 15 minutes of "fame"....it will never be considered an Oldie.

I feel so sorry for youngsters today who have the advantage of a whole assortment of technical advantages for their music but are left with nothing like this terrible dreck. No wonder they are mad all the time.

I heard Pumped Up Kicks on alternative stations before it made it to CHR. It was an OK song but when WRXP started overplaying it, I started to despise it. From the beginning, I never saw what was so special about the song. And I never noticed the whistle chorus. I actually liked Lighters until it got overplayed. Oddly enough, I don't mind Best Thing I Never Had.

ET is just a lyrical mess. Infect me with your poison? Wanna be your victim? Sure, getting raped by an alien is something every girl wants. And Kanye makes it even more creepy with "I tell you what to do" and "I abducted you." Which is a shame since he's a much better lyricist than that. The fact that it was a #1 hit shows that there were a lot of people who never paid attention to what the song's about.

I actually liked Please Don't Go and I've heard it a number of times during the summer when I came home from work. It wasn't overplayed and it wasn't ignored in New York.

Take Over Control Afrojack...Jar Of Hearts C Perri....We Found Love Rihana..E.T Katy Perry...Like A G 6 Far East Movement..Best

Worst Lighters BMW...Lady Gaga Judas...Mike Posner Bow Chicka Bow Wow

I base this on my taste...not what was over played ect

For the record I hated the two Adele songs but understand they were mga hits

Best: Rocketeer, Pumped Up Kicks, and Party Rock Anthem before it got overplayed

Worst: Someone like you, Born this way, and Sexy and I know it.

Best: Rolin in the Deep was a refreshing change but catchiest song goes to Last Friday Night.

Worst: How did Party Rock Anthem become a hit?

Irrespective of the critical posts, I think Pumped Up Kicks will probably garner the top honour of single of the year when the Pazz and Jop survey of music critics comes out in the Village Voice at the end of January. If such a category existed, the worst single honors should go to Maroon 5!

Party Rock Anthem is the "best" and Sexy And I Know It is the "worst"?

For me, the only quality CHR Top 10 hit this year has been Pumped Up Kicks - everything else I've felt strongly about peaked in the 20s/30s :-\

Best: Selena Gomez, Foster The People & the return of the ballad (Adele, Christina Perri, etc.)

Worst: Rihanna & Beyonce (both fatiguing acts)

2011 was the year Lady Gaga fell from glory. Her new stuff just isn't having the same impact as her earlier stuff like Poker Face and Bad Romance.

Best: Adele. She was the breath of fresh air CHR needed, and I hope she will pave the way for a more variety of sound in CHR. It's already great the format is moving more towards the dance sound. Party Rock Anthem is getting annoying, but that will probably be one of the biggest songs of the year, alongside Adele's Rolling in the Deep.

Worst: Lady Gaga. Judas was a terrible song, Born This Way sounds like a Madonna knockoff, On The Edge was dull. Could this be her final act or will a third album get her back on top. I agree with Rhiana. She's on too many songs and her voice is just too annoying.

Best: "Rolling In The Deep", "Pumped Up Kicks" were refreshing sounds to CHR

Worst: Agree on "E.T." as being lyrically weird and creepy.

At least the YouTube smash "Friday" from Rebecca Black didn't cross over to CHR.

I agree, I wonder if Gaga is running out of steam? Artists like Katy Perry and Rhianna continue to have success but Gaga is kinda stumbling. Born This Way was a big hit, but you never hear it anymore - Judas came and went, Edge Of Glory's performance was decent and You & I was just mediocre.

Best:Rihanna and Katy Perry...I loved every one of their hits this year. Their songs have staying power too, I never got too burned on them no matter how many spins they got.

Britney Spears:I liked her 2011 hits. I am surprised and impressed that she was able to make a comeback/re-invent herself. She easily could have become a hasbeen if not a joke by now.

Niki Minaj-Super Bass...although I started getting bored by it right around the time the Cumulus stations finally started playing it.

Dragonette-Hello: I discovered this song on NRJ/France in 2010 and instantly fell in love with it. I was glad it at least got some U.S airplay in 2011.

Keri Hilson-Pretty Girl Rock: I have always been attracted to stuck up girls who are pretty and know it. Glad they had this anthem in 2011.

Skylar Grey: I thought she was fabulous on "I Need A Doctor" and "Coming Home". She made those songs great. Although I heard a solo song of hers and it sounded reall weak. She just needs the right song.

Adele:Although I have gotten burned on her first two big radio hits (as great as they are) I am discovering and enjoying her other songs. What a talent. I would like to see Florence and the Machine break through to CHR in 2012, their music reminds me of Adele a little.

Pumped Up Kicks: Catchy and Different sounding. Will always remind me of 2011.

Cobra Starship:You Make Me Feel. I don't even know her name but I love the female vocalist on this song. I saw her on Conan and was even more impressed, she is going to be a star.

Mixed:Lady Gaga I liked "Edge Of Glory" the sax is what made that song special. But "You and I" was the first song of hers I didn't care for. She drifted too far away from what made her so good. That song actually made me lose interest in her but she could still win me back if her next project has more of that artificial dance sound.

Worst:Beyonce-Best Thing I Never Had...I was the one who said this was her jump the shark moment. I know CHR is more of a female format but I can't imagine any man enjoying this song. Many of the women who embrace this song will end up alone with cats when they get older. I think the "it sucks to be you right now" lyric has a very low metaphysical vibration. I am tired of this mindset. It would be really exciting for the human race and male-female relationships if we could move beyond the angry/bitter message of this song.

LMFAO-Sexy and I Know It. Perhaps the most annoying song I ever heard. I have already expressed how much I abhor this song in other threads. As much as I adore women who are sexy and know it, I don't care for men with this attitude. I prefer the way things used to be when men were basically sexually invisible. Everything started going wrong in the early 90s with Marky Mark and his six pack abs. Now it's come to this. I would like to think this song is humorous and I'm overanalyzing it..perhaps so but I don't get the non-threatening novelty vibe I did with Right Said Fred-I'm Too Sexy 20 years ago...this song seems like it's making a statement, is reflecting the metrosexual movement and is trying to push the culture even further in that direction.

One more comment about Lady Gaga. My girlfriend was a fan of her's from the start. She liked every song until "Judas" which she found very offensive to her Catholic faith. She no longer likes Lady Gaga..all because of that one song. I wonder if there were others who reacted that way?

I agree with your Skyler Grey comments...her solo stuff is boring...but its strange the dance mixes of her songs really stand out...check out"Invisible"(Kaskade remix)...its fantastic.

It is dishearting to see all these posters base the best/worst on chart positions....How much staying power a song has does not determine if its a quality song....when all it takes these days is a name like Rihanna or Katy perry to succeed...who cares what the song sounds like.

My respect for lady gaga has actually grown...she is willing to try different things. I think in the end she will prove she is not a one trick pony...she at one time was a punk singer before her music career took off...but I guess everybody just wants artificial dance music...personally I like my music real...
