Best and not-so-good of 2011

Best: LMFAO, Katy Perry ("Last Friday Night"), Gym Class Heroes, Bruno Mars ("Lazy Song"), OneRepublic ("Good Life").

On fence: "Pumped Up Kicks"... this years Kings of Leon.

Worst: Anything Michael Posner, and we found out this year that you don't have to know how to sing OR use Auto-Tune to have hits (Adele).

One more comment about Lady Gaga. My girlfriend was a fan of her's from the start. She liked every song until "Judas" which she found very offensive to her Catholic faith. She no longer likes Lady Gaga..all because of that one song. I wonder if there were others who reacted that way?

Thanks for bringing this up. I am personally Catholic and find the song pretty offensive, even as a young person. I'm not saying she doesn't have talent..just wish she didn't use her talent in such a negative way.

Was in Catholic high school when "Like A Prayer" was out in 1989. Lots of people will upset, especially when you tied in the video.

Out of curiosity (and if I'm correctly assuming that you're from Long Island), which Catholic High School did you attend?

Yep, it upset Pepsi-cola enough to pull her ads at the time. More evidence that we just need to separate church from pop music, unless you go the Doobie Brothers route.

Worst:Beyonce-Best Thing I Never Had...I was the one who said this was her jump the shark moment. I know CHR is more of a female format but I can't imagine any man enjoying this song. Many of the women who embrace this song will end up alone with cats when they get older.

This has to be one of the funniest lines I have read in years. So true.

Rolling in the Deep was the #1 song according to Billboard. Party Rock Anthem and Firework round out the top 3 of the year.

http://www.billboard.com/#/charts-year-end/hot-100-songs?year=2011

That same list also has J Lo's "On The Floor" at #11, ahead of big hits like "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" and "Someone LIke You". I don't agree. Is that a mistake?

I'm guessing that's because Last Friday Night had a short chart run, and Someone Like You's chart run got cut off by the December 1 cutoff date that Billboard uses (I think)

One of my best songs I liked in 2011:

Song Title - Artist:

Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO
Sexy And I Know It - LMFAO
Super Bass - Nicki Minaj
Moment for Life - Nicki Minaj
Born This Way - Lady Gaga
Last Friday Night - Katy Perry
S&M - Rihanna
Born This Way - Lady Gaga
Edge of Glory - Lady Gaga
Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 f/Christina Aguilera
Domino - Jesse J
Stereo Hearts - Gym Class Heroes
Gettin it in - DRU
We Found Love - Rihanna f/Calvin Harris
Hearbeat - The Fray
...many more

My "Not" so best songs in 2011 - Dislike:

Rolling in Deep - Adele
Someone like You - Adele
Sky Full of Lighters - Bad Meets Evil
The Lazy Song - Bruno Mars
I Need A Doctor - Dr. Dre f/Eminem
Forget You! - Cee Lo
Price Tag - Jesse J f/B.O.B.
Judas - Lady Gaga

Suprised at the fair amount of hate there is for Adele. I completely agree that she was WAY overplayed. But she's actually one of the few artists that I feel actually has some talent.

You have to admit that "Rolling in the Deep" was probably the freshest thing to hit CHR in a while....until it was played ever 5 minutes. I actually hope her current single, "Set Fire to the Rain", gives her some new listeners.

If anyone really thinks Lady Gaga or Katy Perry has more talent than Adele, I personally think they're off their rocker. But obviously everyone has their own tastes. As a lot of Grammy stories have pointed out, she's pretty much a lock in all her categories because it's been one of the few times when critics and popularity aligned.

My least favorites of the year are Jar of Hearts and Sexy and I know it. At first I thought Party Rock Anthem was annoying, but it grew on me. I don't mind Addelle, but it doesn't fit on a playlist with Lighters, Give Me Everything, Party Rock Anthem, and even Pumped Up Kicks. Maybe Rolling in the Deep does, but not Someone Like You. I quickly got tired of Good Life by Onerepublic. As far as Gaga, I have both her albums and she has some slow songs on there, In Your Brown Eyes and Speechless. You and I was my favorite of these three.

Best:

Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
Katy Perry - The One That Got Away
The Script - For The First Time
Nicki Minaj - Super Bass
Plain White T's - Rhythm Of Love
Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory
Lady Gaga - You & I
Cee Lo Green - Forget You
Flo Rida - Good Feeling
OneRepublic - Good Life
Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight
Britney Spears - I Wanna Go
Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
Cobra Starship - You Make Me Feel
Gym Class Heroes - Stereo Hearts
Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger
David Guetta/Usher - Without You
Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor
Lady Antebellum - Just A Kiss
Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All

Worst:

Bad Meets Evil - Lighters
Bruno Mars - anything
Black Eyed Peas - Can't Get Enough
LMFAO - Sexy & I Know It
Ke$ha - Blow
Christina Perri - Jar Of Hearts
Adele - Rolling In The Deep (mostly due to the fact that it was horribly overplayed)
Eric Turner/Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars
The Band Perry - If I Die Young
Katy Perry - ET

Agreed. I don't see why there's a backlash against Adele. She's practically the only vocalist on CHR that isn't auto-tuned or relies heavily on electronic sounds and rappers during the bridge.

I've always hated Katy Perry. She would have been alright if she stuck with a more rock oriented sound but went the other route with the sleezy Ke$ha-like sound. Lady GaGa was on top when she debuted in '09 but looks like she's starting to flame out as we are used to her outrageous outfits. Her music went from being innovative to sounding like just another female vocalist singing over a techno song.

I'm going to say "Favorites" and "Least favorites" instead of "Best" and "Worst," as everyone has their own taste.

Favorites:
The Edge of Glory
Mr. Know-It-All
Just A Kiss
Without You
Till The World Ends
I Wanna Go
Tonight Tonight
We Found Love
(F***in') Perfect
Stereo Love
Grenade
On The Floor
Give Me Everything

Least favorites:
Judas (probably my least favorite song of the entire year... but my 57-year-old mother thinks this song is the greatest artistic achievement of the past 10 years)
Run The World (Girls) (I don't mind Best Thing I Never Had actually, but this was a real stinker and deserved to bomb)
Bottoms Up
Last Friday Night
Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)
Sexy And I Know It
S&M
Anything by Jason DeRulo or Chris Brown
